Bipolar Advantages – No Longer If, But Why And How

highwayI attended a great presentation at the APA annual conference in San Francisco about Achievement, Innovation, and Leadership in the Affective Spectrum. Four distinguished panelists gave presentations about their research into why people with bipolar disorder tend to exhibit advantages in some parts of their lives.

“UP” Exceeding Greatness Costs/Benefits, A Quest for Control

This post describes a profound understanding of the “UP” experience/condition; mania.

It is to be appropriately noted that this posting has been written from the third person perspective of the writer. It is to be held in respect to the abstract third person, not the writer himself.

Before reading this post it is vital to have an open mind and a grasp of the realm of possibility. Most importantly, it is germane to clear from your mind all preconceived ideas in regards to every facet of your knowledge thus far and your prediction of the future. While reading do not relate this post to anyone else’s preconceived notions as well. After reading, you may then finally reflect on the post.

Please reply with your thoughts, thank you.

For sake of beginnings, costs shall make a suitable one. “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” “You want something…go get it…period.” But, at what cost? In the moment costs seem to be all that therein is. But…Contrarily and simply…, in comparison, they are virtually absent, eliminated by the benefits. The costs of mania are resultant of the lack of control over the benefits; logically one can see how benefits eliminate costs in this manner of replacing them. Lest one not move forward and beyond the transition point, costs be evident and experienced. Apprehension of this concept is paramount to progression. Fleeing unknowns yields a cost steady state of fluctuating well-being, meaning ups and downs with ups only being ups as a result of their relativity to the downs.

Its almost as if the benefits are evident: creativity, imagination, vision, mind’s eye, revelation, exposé, discovery, innovation, originality, uniqueness, ingenuity, cleverness, shrewdness, astuteness, perceptiveness, perspicacity, insight, awareness, cognizance, appreciation, alertness, vigilance, observance, performance, fulfillment, serenity, satisfaction, pleasure, desire, joy, willpower, resolution, determination, tenacity, perseverance, persistence, fortitude, strength, power, clout, courage, bravery, gallantry, fearlessness, boldness, self-assurance, chutzpah, effrontery, valor, audacity, resilience, diligence, assiduousness, sedulousness, tirelessness, indefatigability, vigor, energy, dynamism, vitality, verve, importunity, aspiration, ambition, success, triumph, realization, consciousness, awareness, recognition, apprehension, appreciation, attainment, skill, proficiency, aptitude, gratification, indulgence, delight, enchantment, self-actualization, nirvana, bliss, ecstasy, execution, readiness, enthusiasm, fervor, vehemence, passion, lust, gusto, zeal, ardor, fanaticism, keenness, zest, mindfulness, wakefulness, sentience, acumen, discernment, intelligence, intellect, brainpower, comprehension, conception, understanding, grasp, intuition, acuity, talent, endowment, quickness, drive, initiative, enterprise, determination, motivation, impetus, inspiration, muse, confidence, greatness, excellence, brilliance, enlightenment, life, self-transcendence, perfection.

The question is how to control mania. It is a quest to access the benefits and beyond. You know what they are, but not necessarily are they achievable at the present. To achieve is to actualize the positive progression of our current mental state. The benefits are known innately, do not seek them, they are already yours, whether realized now or later. The first act is to actualize the preceding in order to replace previous negative recurring mental states. Next, simply, the world is yours. Mania is the beginning of the post-human condition and is leading to a civilization with god-like characteristics. “To infinity and beyond.” All your dreams are yours and will be received when pursued.

    “…and then they progressed.”

Thanks for listening. Please reply with your thoughts and questions.

Would like to bring your attention to genetic research on alpha-1-antitrypsin variants and creativity.

DE Schmechel and CE Edwards, Fibromyalgia, mood disorders and intense creative energy: A1AT polymorphisms are not always silent, Neurotoxicology 2012.

DE Schmechel, Art, alpha-1-antitrypsin polymorphisms and intense creative energy: blessing or curse? Neurotoxicology 2007.

Both papers show a relationship between these common (10% of population) genetic variants
and intense creative energy with increased proportion in persons presenting with anxiety and
or episodic mood disorders (eg bipolar spectrum).

30-40% of professional artists (presenting to clinic) carry A1AT polymorphisms.

Common theme is early effects on brain development and genes that enhance some positive
traits and also have some negativity (eg susceptibility to lung, liver inflammation, fibromyalgia).

The fact that some mental illnesses have actually helped Historical leaders accomplish what they wanted to during their manic stages is intriguing. Proof that a mental disorder is not all bad and can even help you accomplish things you couldn’t before.
