I know exactly what you are saying. I’ve put on 25 pounds the 6 months I’ve been back on my meds. I’m trying to loose it, but while I’m taking my meds.

Oh I wish I could tell you how many times I have complained about this but at the same time it was a life saver. Guys, I was skinny my whole life. Size 5 and 7. None of the bipolar meds worked until I found zyprexa. It gave me my life back but I gained major weight!! I gained 100 lbs before I stopped gaining. I couldn’t stop eating and I was also eating during my sleep!! One of the moms at school asked me if I was pregnant:( I was eventually able to SLOWLY get off of it and now take trileptal which is a mood stabilizer and effexor xr-antidepressant. I want to get skinny again so badly but its been tough. I’m glad I have my mental health tho:) God bless everyone who is battling bi-polar and let’s help each other or people that are trying to find their way in the journey:)

This is definitely something that I have struggled with. Like momoftwo, I have been skinny my whole life and very active and energetic but, with my diagnosis of bp about 2 1/2 years ago and beginning to take meds like abilify, which have weight gain as a side effect, I’ve definitely gained a lot of weight and when I go through my downs, I don’t have the energy or desire to work out or cook healthy meals. Fortunately, I’m thriving with the disorder and generally feel very well but, I agree wholeheartedly in that we shouldn’t have to choose between a fit, healthy body and a healthy mind. That being said, I’d much rather be a little chubby than manic or depressed. But, it’s sad that we have to make that choice.

You can do it. I lost 40 lbs and went from a sedintary life to an active one. Still haven’t tamed some of the unhealthy eating but I keep trying. The irony is the better I take care of myself the less meds I need and the easier it is to lose and keep weight off.
