Being beautifully bipolar has its ups and downs, depressions and manic phases. So what are we supposed to do to help ourselves get out of the doom and gloom. Well, here, my friend, are ten things you can do to be happier.
- Start your day with music
Music has the same effect on the brain as cocaine (but this is a lot safer and a lot more legal). Music in the morning pumps you up and gets you ready for the day.
- I love music. I prefer it to television or movies. Yeah. That much. So listening to music at other times during the day can put that pep back in your step.
- Dance. Don’t worry about making a fool of yourself. Do it where no can see you if you like. Personally, I enjoy dancing in the shower and while I am getting ready for the day. No one is in the bathroom with me and I can be silly and zany without feeling foolish.
- Compliment someone else. Doesn’t it feel good when someone tells you they like your hairstyle or you clothing or your shade of lipstick. I know it makes me feel good. Complimenting someone else makes them probably feels the same way – good about themselves.
- Complimenting someone else will make you feel good. There isn’t a day that goes by (when I leave my house) that I don’t compliment at least one person and it makes me feel wonderful. I am happy because I am the reason they are smiling now when just a minute ago their brow was furrowed.
- Get a hobby. Do something completely unrelated to your work. Yes, you are busy. Heck, we are all busy, but an hour of your day can be used for the greater good of your mental health. Pick something completely new (I am learning to play guitar) or pick up an old hobby, like journaling.
- Do something artistic. I know, I know, some of you will swear there isn’t a creative bone in your body, but if you are truly living with bipolar disorder, you have a little bit of creativity in there. If nothing else, buy one of those giant coloring books and some colored pencils, no need for them to be fancy. Good old Crayola pencils will work and just start staying inside the lines…or better yet, don’t. It’s your masterpiece. Do it your way.
- Clean up. I am a messy person. Every person who knows this will attest to it. I do not like that. I wish my place was cleaner. I am going to make an attempt at being a more tidy individual and so should you. Living in chaos really is not fun. Imagine your dishes done, your clothes all hung up in your closet, the dog hair vacuumed up. There, I feel happier all ready.
- Get out of the house. I know how hard this can be for those of us who also live with anxiety disorder, but there is only so long we can whole away in our place. We must go to the grocery store at some point. We will run out of dog food. And people food. It got so bad for me that there was a point when I would work up the nerve to leave my apartment on the second floor, get down to the parking lot and go right back up. But with the help of medication and therapy I am a lot better today.
- Meet up with someone for coffee or lunch. This can be a friend, someone you are dating, or even someone in your family. Just make a point to meet with someone and share some conversation. You can both share and if there is something bothering you this is the perfect time to bring it up. Letting go of whatever it is that is bothering you will make you happier. See how that is a win-win.
So maybe you can’t do everything on this list, at least not right away, but try a few and I bet you’ll find yourself smiling a whole lot more.
