International Suicide Survivor Day

Intl Suicide Survivor Day 2015Today was a special day. I got to attend the International Suicide Survivor Day in my state. I am not a survivor of suicide. I survived suicide.

I went with someone close to me who had experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide. I thought it might help him to be among others who had experienced the same grief he had. I thought it would help me to hear the stories of people who had loved and lost.

I attended the loss of a sibling break-out group because that is what my friend had experienced. It made me think that each of the people in the group could have been MY sister or MY brother. And it made me sad and I cried a lot.

I encourage you to seek out events, like the community money-raising walks, that the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention put together. They are so cathartic.

We left the 4 hour event with a lighter foot in our step. We had cried. We had shared. We had survived.
