3 thoughts on “Depersonalization in Anxious Kids: What it is and How to Help

My son is 21 years old and has been suffering from depersonalization disorder for about 3 years. He is gradually getting worse. He is seeing a psychiatrist and has been prescribed Rexulti, Anapranil, and Vulox. It seems to be making matters worse, as he woke me this morning contemplating suicide due to his inable to feel connections to things and is terrified of going back to college or getting a job. I need help!

As a child, and still now (though a lot less often), I would feel depersonalization. It felt like every second I would “wake up” from a dream. I would feel detached from the world, sometimes feeling away from my body. Some memories from these times are like an outside observer looking down on myself. I still struggle to find the words to explain this, and see a therapist regularly. As a child I told my parents how I felt and they would shoo me away with “quit begging for attention” and “where did you learn this, quit lying”… even though my mother had a BA in Child Psychology. I guess if you are looking for help for a child I would say step one is be open to their emotions and words. Don’t belittle them or say they are making things up, it only hurts and damages your trust and relationship with the child.

I feel as if I’m in a dream like I’m here or I feel like zoned in a way or that like something won’t hurt and I would also feel like when I shit my eyes and opened them that it was black and I couldn’t see as in if u rub your eyes to long and open then it’s black. I have also had an Issue with ocd where I had to do stuff or I thought something bad was going to happen but that went away then I was in this phase where I had to right everything down , that seems to be gone for the longest time when I talked to my mom I had to repeat things and she had to say if right or we had to do it again I hate talking about it because i don’t want it to happen again I was always taught to say Satin get behind me to keep the negativity away and recently not to long ago when I ate I felt as if my mouth was numb like I was eating but I wasn’t I’m not sure what’s going on but it does scare me. I do also get ringing in my ears as well and when I’m using head phones or something I feel like I can’t in one ear the same thing in the other.
