    Very interesting article Laura, but I am a foster carer who cares for a child who has suffered childhood trauma prior to residing with us. Whenever he feels scared of something, which is often, reassurrance and comfort is sometimes all you can do. Have you any advice how to do this without reinforcing the dependence on us?

      You have a difficult situation. I can’t give specific advice without knowing the child, but I can give you a tip. If the child is old enough to understand, talk to her about her fears and then agree that you will give her a single sentence such as “I know you are frightened,” and a quick hug but you can’t go on and on about it. Does that help? Again, we can’t always control what our children learn from other situations. Good luck and thank you for caring for kids!
