People with ADHD have got something going on when it comes to their sense of humor.
But like many aspects of ADHD, our humor is like a shotgun.
When we pull the trigger, some of the shot is gonna miss the mark. And since we’re easily distracted, sometimes all the shot is going to miss the target.
We likely shouldn’t be trusted with guns, shouldn’t be hunting at all.
We’re not. Well, we’re not in this scenario. We’re actually trying to be funny. The shotgun thing was an analogy.
And an analogy is kind of like a pun.
Sort of …
The thing is
For some reason, when people laugh we feel good. And many of us try to make people laugh a lot because of that.
And we’ll share whatever comes to mind because of that.
And every now and then we’ll hit gold.
But why do we care?
For one thing, when situations are uncomfortable, we learn early in life that humor can defuse that. And we often seem to find ourselves in uncomfortable situations, usually we’re in the center of them.
So what could be more natural than trying to joke our way out of the discomfort and into a place where we can move forward?
We are not subtle, but we are hopeful in situations like this.
We’ll be the ones who are willing to risk the ridicule if there is the outside chance of a return on our investment.
Especially since, if the situation is bad and we’re in the center of it already, we have very little to lose by being in more trouble.
So, we’ll try
We’ll tell you the first funny thing that pops into our heads.
Was it something inappropriate? So what, you’ve heard us do that before, it’s what we’re kind of famous for, right?
And was it not that funny? Maybe, but sometimes the fact that we said anything at all and even looked like we were expecting it to be funny is funnier than we thought what we said was.
And. We. Don’t. CARE!
As noted above, we have nothing to lose. So we’ll be self deprecating. We’ll ridicule something that is sacrosanct. We’ll say the word you never thought you’d hear in the situation we’re in together.
And we’ll say the lame pun, if that’s all we have. And we’ll follow it up with something even lamer in the hopes that it triggers our mind into coming up with the thing that will disrupt the current situation and bring about a new situation from which we can see a way to extricate ourselves and save the day.
Send in the clowns
In billiards or curling it is called a circus shot.
We’ll try the wildest thing in the hope that it might work, with the knowledge that if it doesn’t, there’s little likelihood that the result could be worse.
We’ll try the lame pun, and hope that the nest thing out of our mouth will be the hidden gem.
But the thing is … we’ll keep on trying. That’s who we are.
