Me And Schedules

schedule
I’m a little behind

It’s Friday.

Normally on Friday I’m posting my third and final post of the week.

But this week has been a little off the tracks.

Last week I went to the emergency room for some issues I was having and a whole lot of change ensued.

I’m on new and different meds, I’m under new orders for health care management, and I’m feeling a bit beat up from not just the new pains but the new medications as well.

None of it!

And none of these changes has to do with my ADHD. It’s all personal health, things I won’t bore you with the details of because … well, because they’re personal.

But does health have any affect on ADHD?

Of course it does!

You bet. Just read my last two posts if you want examples of the effects.

And here is one more. I’m trying, I swear I am, to get caught up on things that need doing. And yes, I am making headway.

But some things are sometimes being sacrificed for others.

Well, maybe not sacrificed …

Things on my schedule are being shuffled around a bit within allowable predefined latitudes.

The frequency of this Man Of DistrAction blog I write, for instance, is defined as “an average of three posts a week.” When I first started writing it I knew another ADHD blogger who, on more than one occasion, suffered stress by falling behind on the terms of a very similar contract. They would ponder inspiration until it was suddenly Thursday and they were looking at a need for three posts in the next three days.

I chose …

Having seen that happen on several occasions I chose to lie to myself. I told myself, “You are contractually obligated to submit a post every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. No, don’t go look at the contract, you listen to me. This is how it is.”

And … I listened to myself. And I wrote on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Yes, I knew

Of course I knew that was a lie, but I also knew I didn’t want to get into a situation where I was struggling and beginning to hate my work.

A few years in, when my household started looking at Monday as part of our weekend I switched my days to Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, but I was so well practiced at it by then that the change was an easy one. And it’s been that way for a long time.

I think the number might be four …

I suspect that the number of times that I have not managed to stick to my schedule in these past eight years of writing this post is four. One of those times I actually forgot.

Two of those times it was because of travel and inconvenience.

This week I’m calling it health related.

And yet

They all seem like very valid reasons given the duration of my work here, and yet I find myself apologizing. That might just be because I’m Canadian.

The record of my posts seems to me to be rather spectacular given that I write about ADHD.

And I love that my main message about ADHD is that we can and should deal with the impact of it while keeping an open mind and not beating ourselves up over its negative characteristics. And I’d say I’ve done that and done it well.

But still, I’m sorry. Look for my third post of the week on Saturday.

And be kind. I’m not all that well apparently.

Me And Schedules

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or more generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about having ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
