Stuff Happens and I Keep Going

Forward, ever forward

This is the state of affairs for humans.

Things, unexpected or otherwise, happen. And then we keep going. Until we die.

This, has nothing to do with ADHD.

But …

Everyone knows what it is like to be distracted. This is also a human trait.

We all know what it’s like to walk through a doorway and arrive in a room without a clue why we came into that room.

We all misplace our keys or our wallet or our watch at some point. This too is just being human.

Also …

Many people get excited, stimulated into heightened activity when doing something they enjoy.

To remain calm in the face of active enjoyment is inhuman.

So does everyone have ADHD?

Well … yes and no.

ADHD is a collection of symptoms that are present in the general population, but that afflict those of us who are deemed to have ADHD at a greater intensity and frequency, to the point that those symptoms impact our lives negatively.

I once quipped that having ADHD symptoms is ordinary and having ADHD is extraordinary.

And the cure?

There is, of course, no cure as yet. There is no real fix.

The specialists will tell you it is the most manageable disorder.

But you have to actually participate in its management and, well, that gets boring and we don’t do boring.

What’s our part in this then?

We, whether we like it or not, are required to cope.

We actually get no choice in this. We cope.

Whether we cope well or not, we continue to cope. There is no other way.

Like being herded

I grew up on a farm. And yes, we had to heard animals.

It always fascinated me that animals would rather go in any direction but the one you wanted them to go in. There’s better feed in the next field, but they didn’t want to go that way because that’s the way I was trying to get them to go.

I recognize myself in those animals. I think I always did.

Once through the gate …

Once they were through the gate they’d all be like, “Oh, hey, look at this grass! Wow, I’m glad I’m here.”

So what’s like being herded? Life is. Once we acquiesce to life and its driving forces, we often just put that in our past and take stock of what’s new and what advantages there are to our new surroundings.

And then?

We move forward. We keep going. We continue to live.

Having ADHD means that we don’t like being herded. Because we don’t like to have our thoughts redirected.

But wait …

Once it happens, we usually just go with it, you know, after a little tantrum maybe.

I’ve learned over the years that I’m going to keep going when stuff happens, and I’m finally beginning to accept that stuff is going to keep happening.

I’m finally learning to cope gracefully.

Just keep going.

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live on the traditional lands of the Chippewas of Nawash in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or 7 generations and my First Nations friend's families go back hundreds of generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I am a freelance writer and I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about living with ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
