Challenging Life

Another way of life

An ambiguous title, that. Is it about challenging your life or is it about your life challenging you?

And the answer is ...

Well, both, really.

If you're here reading this because you have ADHD, then your life is challenging.

And I don't care if you think your ADHD is a gift, it's still a challenge. Maybe you're right, it is a gift, but you still have the challenge of learning to use...

Put Me In, Coach!

Who needs a coach?

You know how it is, right? The game is close. You're watching your team struggle. And you're sure that you could turn the thing around if only the coach would play you.

And that's absolutely nothing like having an ADHD coach!

I mean, you're not a team, and you're never on the bench, you're always in the game. So you can't be begging your coach to put you in.

Seeking Distraction

As someone with ADHD, I'm no stranger to being distracted. And you'd not think that would be something I'd consider a benefit.

But the truth is, that perseverance is the far more noxious symptom for me these days. I hate when I have time on my hands and it disappears with me down some rabbit hole of "hyper-focus."

I'm talking about the nasty click-bait primarily. But other things can hold my eyes like...

Podcasting The Dark Side

I had a dark side ...

No, sorry, this has nothing to do with StarWars™, this is about the dark side of my life.

And no, it isn't about my current life. Currently, I'm doing really well.

This is about what my life was like before.

This is about being a younger me, with no knowledge of ADHD, and no executive function that was comparable to the executive functions enjoyed by my peers. And the podcast...

Me And ADHD, Inseparable.

Separate this!

On Monday I talked about feeling guilty about my ADHD, and then I talked about how much I've progressed, and how much of the guilt has been set aside.

It's still there, but I've realized that I don't need to carry it with me. But as I thought about my ADHD, I thought I ought to find out how it impacted those around me, specifically in my household...

ADHD? … Guilty!

The burden of guilt

I am guilty of having ADHD. But more than that, I feel guilty about having ADHD.

I feel guilty about bringing in to every relationship I have, the burden of this disorder.

I feel guilty about bringing that same burden to work when I go.

My ADHD is a heavy load to carry, when it weighs on me as guilt.

Scurry …

Turkey, turking ...

So, it's Easter.

And as often happens on long, celebratory weekends, family members are travelling to meet family members who are staying home expectantly waiting for them.

My partner's family has arrived. This is new for me, and yet ... not.

Between The Goose And The Gander

Offering to beat me ...

There's so much dichotomy involved in having ADHD that it is often hard to explain to people how disruptive it is to one's life.

I mean, we walk, we talk, we go to the supermarket and the gym and the local pub and the park, we work and play and socialize and are, in every way, the picture of typical humanity ... at a glance.

But when you look...

Changing Pace With ADHD

Filing for dinner ...

When I'm focused intently on something, I do not want to be interrupted. If I am, I have to make certain that I do not let that interruption inform my reactions.

If I let that happen, I'll snarl. I'll be upset and I'll blame the interruption, or worse, the interrupter. I don't want to do that.

It's taken me a while to realize that the fault for my...

Busy Mind, Busy Place

Hanging in the city ...

I'm off on an adventure this weekend. I've returned to the city of my birth. Well, I've returned to the city that gobbled up the town of my birth, but even then it was hard to find the boundaries between all the big little cities that ended up being the Greater Toronto Area.

My country, Canada, is huge. And my province, Ontario, is bigger than many countries. And it...
