A Glimpse Into a Different ADHD Mind

I like the way Mckenna views her world ... ©2011 Sheryl Krieger

Some of you know that I wrote another blog before this one, Tao Of Taylor, written under my other name, Taylor McKinlay.

You may not know, however, of a third blog out there. A blog that speaks to my love of poetry. ADD-Verse is a blog that invites people with ADHD to submit their poetry so that I can selfishly hoard it all in a collection. Of course I share it, and I also cherish every submission.

The rules of the blog are that you can write about anything, the poem must be a minimum of one word long and it must be written using letters found in books like dictionaries or encyclopedias … in short, just about anything goes.

Did I say you had to have ADHD to submit a poem? If I did, I’m sorry, you don’t have to. You might be writing about a loved one who has ADHD. I guess the long and short of it is that if you can connect your poem to ADHD in any way, I’ll present it to the world. Oh, I do need a name and a copyright year.

But enough about my fabulous poetry website, I promised you a glimpse into a different ADHD mind. I’m about to deliver, via poetry (you knew there was a connection, didn’t you). My new friend Mckenna wrote a poem and it was submitted to me through ADD-Verse. I loved it so much that I decided to show it to you.

In my opinion it captures the raptures of the ADHD mind. It reports on them without hesitation,  there is no fear in this poem, only fun and freedom, and a tantalizing acceptance of one’s own mind. I’ve fallen in love with the way Mckenna thinks and I want to be able to think like her, playful and self deprecating, honest and unapologetic. Are you dying to read her words yet? I’m dying to read them once more myself.

MCKENNA

The M is for Marine Biologist which I will grow up to be. It’s also for magnificent or mischievous which I can be at the same time.

C is for creative, chatty, cranky, catholic & courage that all describe me perfectly. It’s also for can’t, as in can’t wait because I have no patience.

K is for Katie who’s my sister. But mostly it’s for Kenny who I was named after and was taught wisely by.

E is for energetic-ness which is the main reason I’m me. Also it’s for Earth where we live and I can be me.

The N’s are for Nots, like “not quiet,” “not normal” and “not annoying” (not all the time). There are 2 N’s because 2 is better than 1 and 2 makes a pair.

A is for my activeness and my aloud thoughts. Also for anxious for snow & rain or a lot of talking that I do. A is also for A leader, A singer, An individual or A Lover.

I may be different from you, but what I know is I’m still a human too!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I try everyday to put beauty on paper, I labour over it and struggle. Sometimes it works, most times I’m lucky if what I write makes sense. But sometimes, when the time is right and the moon is hung just so and the planets have aligned themselves in a position conducive to the flow of thoughts … sometimes beautiful things just happen, beautiful words just … occur.

This time they occurred for Mckenna. I had cleaned up her poem for you, but you and Mckenna deserve the truth. Mckenna is 11 years old, she never knew the 1900’s, she won’t remember when ADHD was called Minimal Brain Dysfunction, and she doesn’t spell everything perfectly – yet.

And you deserve to read these words again, this time the way they were written. Lets not ever let the mind that wrote these words know the sting of stigma. Let’s never let Mckenna down, she deserves to be Mckenna … this Mckenna:

Kelly Babcock

I was born in the city of Toronto in 1959, but moved when I was in my fourth year of life. I was raised and educated in a rural setting, growing up in a manner I like to refer to as free range. I live in an area where my family history stretches back 6 or more generations. I was diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 50 and have been both struggling with the new reality and using my discoveries to make my life better. I write two blogs here at Psych Central, one about having ADHD and one that is a daily positive affirmation that acts as an example of finding the good in as much of my life as I possibly can.
