Finding a New Therapist is Like Dating

finding a new therapistRegular readers will be aware that earlier this year my previous therapist left his practice and therefore couldn’t see me anymore. (see “When Your Therapist Breaks Up With You”)

So I embarked on a search for a new therapist.  I suppose one looks for similar qualities in a therapist that you look for in a perspective mate: someone who listens, is understanding and compassionate, offers thoughtful feedback…

the opposite of loveDuring my summer vacation I stayed with my friends Patty and Ron – long time friends who are surrogate parents to me.  They provide advice, counsel and a place of refuge.  This visit was different …

I talked with Patty about a month before arriving and learned that Ron had been laid-off from his company of over 20+ years where he was a top executive.  This was creating havoc in their household.

Ron traveled often for his job and Patty got used to having her independence for several weeks a month.  Now he was home all the time and it was creating a suffocating environment, on top of the concerns about money and how to maintain their home and lifestyle.  She was understandably concerned.
