Intuitive Eating: Q&A with Dietitian Evelyn Tribole

By Margarita Tartakovsky, MS

Today, I’m really excited to feature my interview with Evelyn Tribole, MS, RD, award-winning dietitian and co-author of Intuitive Eating: A Revolutionary Program That Works. I absolutely love this book and think it’s a must-read for everyone.

Nowadays, I think we’ve really gotten away from true healthy eating, and moved to being obsessed with food, fearing food or seeing it as a necessary evil. We’ve equated dieting with healthy eating, even though it’s ineffective and causes us to develop an unhealthy relationship with food in the first place – and to ignore our bodies’ true needs.

  • Thank you! I’m in total agreement.

In fact, I came to the same conclusions after years of yo-yo diets and yo-yo scales. I’ve been living by these rules for the past 8 months, with a few minor dips.

So far I’ve lost 45 pounds (3 stone) over the last 8 months!!! Emotional eating is my monster. Giving emotions a different comfort has been great for mental and physical health.

  • Hi Pannie! So glad you’ve found intuitive eating to be helpful! It’s definitely a process. Sometimes we overeat, sometimes we undereat. The key, I think, is to be flexible and try to sharpen those skills of listening to your body’s internal cues.

    Thanks for sharing! :)

  • I’m so glad to hear a name being put to this!! ..

I had gotten up to nearly 300lbs (298 to be exact), and was really afraid of hitting the 300 mark. I learned how to listen to my body and eat intuitively about August 2009, and had become vegetarian in 2007.

I lost about 75 pounds in a year, and now I’m 120 lbs lighter (130 when not retaining water ;-) ). I’ve tried explaining that your body knows what it needs, you just need to learn to listen.

    I eat anything I want..

  • I totally agree with this approach to food. We need to give ourselves permission to eat and enjoy real food without deprivation.
