Body Image: 5 Ways to Reconnect with Your Body

By Margarita Tartakovsky, MS

Do you ever feel disconnected from your body? Like the two of you are separate entities? Or more like enemies?

In college, I used to have many moments when my body would feel foreign. My body just didn’t feel like my own, and I’d walk around in a haze. These feelings were especially palpable on the nights I’d overeat, when I felt like I was outside my body. When I knew I was ingesting tons of calories and crap but somehow, at the time, I felt so detached that I didn’t care. Now thinking about it, I was too focused on soothing the pain.

  • Thank you so much for doing these & for sharing my thoughts! I think it is SO important to reconnect with our bodies. I also wrote a post on this recently on my blog re Body Image Attacks and believe that when we deconstruct our bodies into part, we are separating our wholeness and wonderfulness. I love my body for what it can DO and its ability not for what its perception as parts does. It is why I connect with pilates, makes me really grateful for my body and its ability to work together. Thanks again for sharing.

  • Great article! I love the idea of using these
tools to enhance and repair your relationship with your body! Especially the yoga tip – my personal “get in my body” go-to. Another good tip is: TELL YOUR STORY – be honest about your experiences and take those negative and shameful secrets that you’ve been holding onto somewhere deep in your heart and GET THEM OUT. Write them down, blog about them, have a heart to heart with your mother/father/first boyfriend, just get rid of them and refuse to let them drag you down any longer. Xoxox.

  • @ Kendra, you’re welcome! :) I loved your post “Body Image Under Attack.” I highly recommend reading it to everyone:

Focusing on what our bodies can do and their amazing abilities (even something as seemingly small as our feet) is really important!

@ Marzipan, thanks so much! I love your tip about telling our stories. How we feel about our bodies and how we treat our bodies often goes back to deeper emotions and experiences. Letting them out can be so freeing. Thanks for stopping by! :)

  • It’s easy to forget that you are a whole body and not just bits that hurt or look fat or feel flabby. Thank you for the reminder to consider me as a whole and to take the time out from every day things to breath and smell the roses.

  • These are some really excellent suggestions for practicing a little self love! Women are constantly bombarded with images that push them to compare themselves to outside standards of beauty rather than appreciating who and what they already are. That’s why we got involved with Love Your Tree [http://eatingdisorder.org/blog/?s=love+your+tree], an annual arts-based, positive body image campaign that helps to teach students about the diversity of beauty. It’s important we remember to stop sometimes and, as you say, “take a breather” and remember that people naturally and beautifully come in all sizes and shapes.

  • @ CEDSheppPratt, thanks! The campaign looks fantastic. Thanks for providing the link and letting us know about it! I appreciate you stopping by and commenting. :)
