Whether you’re constantly worried about your weight, busy bashing your body or, from time to time, find yourself criticizing your appearance, we could all use …

I LOVE Dr. Stacey but 25 things!? I would be hard pressed to list 5!
Yes, 25, and that’s conservative! Are you a good friend, mother? A caring, compassionate person? Are you funny? Do you like the way people can count on you, the way you smile, how thoughtful you can be? Are you a great cook, an honest person? Think of all the dimensions of personality/functioning and incorporate the positive feedback others have given you throughout the years.
That’s so true about the gym locker room! I just joined an all-female gym, and at least half the women walk around the locker room and spa (sauna, steam room, whirlpool) completely, unashamedly naked. Once I got over the shock, it was really eye-opening. Whatever body “stuff” has been going on in my head gets at least partly diffused while I’m there. Which is funny, since I was worried that an upscale, all-female gym might have a competitive, sorority-house-type atmosphere.
The shift came in stages, though. At first, when I’d see someone who looked perfect in their workout gear, I’d be comforted by the fact that she had cellulite too, so we were both imperfect. (This shocked me a little, because I was only aware of judging myself up to that point. I felt like a jerk judging others.) But after a while, I started to realize that there was nothing imperfect about *either* of us.
My body has been taking care of me for 63 years. I honor it.
The legs are the “last to go” and all of my 5 feet 2 and a half inches tall life, I have been told I have fabulous legs, and was even asked if I was a model……….I used to be a size 5 and am now a 14…..I don’t read women’s magazines; who needs another diet, 23 ways to lose 20 pounds in a week, 45 ways to tie a scarf, and another way to hide, stop, camoflage everything you don’t like, makeup etc…
Sheesh, I learned about makeup, etc many years ago; how many times can we read this stuff?!
I want to talk about things that really matter……abuse of women, poverty, homlessness/joblessness, our economy…….
Why do we allow Hollyweird and glossy magazines to decide what/who is beautiful?
@ Allison, that’s so wonderful that you honor your body and acknowledge everything it does for you! So important!
While every society has focused on appearances and had its own ideals, we’re especially celeb-obsessed today that’s for sure. But you’re right, we shouldn’t let anyone decide who or what is beautiful. Every shape, size, color, weight – whatever – is!
I have had a hard time with my self-esteem and body image, but after working on the things that I can change by excercising regularly and eating better, I find myself looking in the mirror and admiring my cuteness from the back, the look and feel of my skin and if I take a great picture, I put in on my desktop.
