Discovering Intuitive Eating: Q&A with Christie from Honoring Health

Tuesday, July 13th, 2010

Today, I’m really excited to present part one of my interview with Christie from Honoring Health, where she writes about her own experiences with intuitive eating, provides tips on eating intuitively, shares delicious recipes and much more.

I greatly admire Christie and her work. In a culture where healthy eating is synonymous with dieting and we cling to stringent eating rules because we’re afraid of getting out of control, her posts are refreshing and very much needed. She offers tons of insights on her blog, and she’s just outright inspiring!

Body Image & How to Honor Yourself

Monday, July 12th, 2010

Every Monday features a tip, exercise, inspiring quote or other tidbit to help boost your body image. For many of us, Mondays are tough. We may feel anxious and stressed out, anticipating an arduous week, especially if we didn’t get much rest and relaxation during the weekend. These kinds of feelings don’t create the best environment for improving one’s body image. In fact, you might be harder on yourself and easily frustrated. You might even feel like you’re walking on egg shells – with yourself! With these posts, I hope you’ll have a healthier and happier body image day, that’ll last throughout the week.

Got a tip for improving body image? Email me at mtartakovsky@gmail.com, and I’ll be happy to feature it. It can be anything you do that’s healthy and helps boost your body image. I’d love to hear from you!

I recently came across an article by Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway at Beliefnet on practical ways to honor yourself, which I think is so important for building a positive body image. So below, I’ve highlighted a few of Rev. Laurie’s helpful tips. You can check out all the tips here.

Today, I’m featuring the last part of my interview with Michelle Lelwica, Th.D, author of The Religion of Thinness: Satisfying the Spiritual Hungers Behind Women’s Obsession with Food and Weight, a book I highly recommend reading.

As an adolescent, Michelle also suffered from a plummeting self-image and disordered eating, starving and bingeing, and wanting so badly to be thin. Thankfully, since then, she’s fully recovered. Below, she talks about her experiences and several ways she found peace. She also shares insight on cultivating spirituality, and how eating and body image problems can become a wake-up call.

Michelle Lelwica on How The Pursuit of Thinness Has Become A Religion

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

Today I’m pleased to present my interview with Michelle Lelwica, ThD, associate professor at Concordia College in Minnesota and author of The Religion of Thinness: Satisfying the Spiritual Hungers Behind Women’s Obsession with Food and Weight, a thought-provoking and must-read book.

In it, Michelle proposes that “our obsessions with eating and weight mask the deeper needs of our spirits.” The pursuit of thinness has become a religion that “gives us an ultimate purpose – the ‘salvation’ that comes from being thin.”

I was feeling pretty lousy about my body image a few weeks ago as I was packing for my trip to NYC, but something changed when I got here. Seeing my family helped put things into perspective and so did several other things we did this week, which I wanted to share with you.
