In honor of Father’s Day, I’d like to share three poems today.

One of these honors the qualities of strength and security that are so essential to children, and another for the quality of fun and playfulness that is equally vital.

A third poem is honor of grandfathers, or, as one person put it, fathers who are just grand.

In the words of David M. Gottesman:

“Fathers, like mothers, are not born. Men grow into fathers – and fathering is a very important stage in their development.”

Hope you enjoy them, here they are:

MY FATHER, MY GUIDING LIGHT

BY JOANNA FUCHS

Dad, you’re like the sun to me,
a sure thing, always there,
beaming light and warmth on my life.
Whatever is good in me today,
I owe to your wisdom, your patience,
your strength, your love.
You taught me by example,
as a role model,
how to be my own person,
how to believe in myself,
instructing me without controlling me.
Even when we disagreed,
you held us together,
so our bond was never broken.
I understand what you did for me,
and I am so grateful that I have you
as my solid foundation, my rock.
I respect you, I admire you, I love you,
my guiding light, my father.

PLAY WITH ME

BY WARREN THROCKMORTON

There’s a magic moment sent down from the sky.
Descending so stealthily, it almost passes me by.
It may be in the morning or the late afternoon,
Or sometime after midnight, when the cow jumps over the moon.

Come, play with me.
Your presence is requested at a banquet for a bear.
The giraffe and the tiger insist you be there.
Please, hurry daddy, the tea is getting cold.
And you are getting old.
Come stay with me, play with me, daddy, please. . .

She brightens me with sunshine twinkling from her eyes.
She captures me with silence and playful long good-byes.
Its see you later alligator, after while crocodile.
Watch my special cartwheel, lets be buddies for a while.

And come, play with me.
Your presence is requested at a banquet for a bear.
The giraffe and the tiger insist you be there.
Please, hurry daddy, the tea is getting cold.
And you are getting old.
Come stay with me, play with me, daddy, please. . .

MY SPECIAL JOY

BY JOANNA FUCHS

A grandfather is a special blessing
enriching the life of a grandchild
with unique and incomparable joys.
Grandpa, you are my special joy.
I get a warm, safe, contented feeling
when I think of you.
With you, I feel no pressure to be
what someone else wants me to be;
you love me enough to let me be me.
You’re never in a hurry;
you always take time to listen and to help.
You are always there for me when I need you;
You’re never too busy for talks, for walks.
I can count on your wisdom,
your life experience,
your understanding heart
to help me comprehend and get through
challenges you’ve already faced.
You are part parent, part teacher,
part best friend.
Your strength and your easy, calm confidence
is your legacy to me,
and I love you dearly.
Happy Father’s Day, Grandpa!
