Pop Psychology

Every time a new Twilight film comes out, my brother and I brave the madding crowds and ridiculously overpriced tickets to see it in theaters.  The overblown romance and cheesy dialogue of the saga is singularly entertaining and best captured on the big screen, where each one of Taylor Lautner’s constantly displayed abdominal muscles can be larger than the human head.  From the melodramatic opening sequence, we’re laughing.  But we’re far from the only ones.  In fact, amidst the endless discussion of Twilight‘s serious diehard fans, the ones who wish they could date Edward or Jacob themselves, it seems that a sizeable chunk of the films’ viewership is being ignored: the amused.

  • Not even gonna lie my favorite line in the whole movie was “after all, I am hotter than you” I agree 100% with this blogs statement. I saw the midnight showing of Twilight:Eclipse and i noticed the same laughter eliciting at all the aforementioned parts. In my theater there were times when women (mainly the moms in my theater) would burst out with ‘you can take me Edward!’ or after the hilarious fight where Bella almost breaks her hand a bunch of women stated “i wouldn’t mind breaking my hand for him! Hell he can break anything he wants as long as he’s mine” i laughed out loud at that one. There are a lot of moments of sheer hilarity in this movie and i believe that is why i like this one so much more than the previous two. Although i will say that David Slade did a remarkable job directing this movie… It was funny and serious and romantic in all the right parts. i agree 100% with this blogs message!

  • Yes. I agree also with this blog 100%. Personally, I think that Twilight is a corny movie but is also pretty entertaining. When I went to the theatres with my friends and saw this movie, there was nothing really “lovey-dovey” or any screams because a person was shirtless (if that makes any sense?). REally everyone in the theatre laughed and giggled because of some of the lines in the movie (i.e., “after all I am hotter than you”.) In conclusion, Twilight is a cheesy movie. Great Blog!

  • Thanks for these articles. I teach public relations, advertising and marketing and like to use media examples such as “Twilight” to keep the younger students interested. I’ve been saying “You know people are writing PhDs on Twilight and Sex And the City”. I can now show them these blogs and the academic qualifications of the writer to encourage the students to go on to do their university thesis on ANY topics that interests them enough.

    • Helen, thanks so much for this comment. You really made my day. Good luck with your students!
