Another just-get-over-it dude. Yes, there are no mental disorders, just manipulators and malingerers.
I agree with Job. This is exactly the crap that my bipolar friend’s husband says about her, while I see her fighting these thoughts off as best she can to save her own life. Fortunately, she is leaving him to save her life. To be fair, I guess Bundrant says this is what your mind MIGHT be saying. However, I’m pretty certain that the two people I know who took their own lives were actually hearing some of this crap from others around them, and that they, gentle souls that they were, did not have the strength to fight the comments off. In my opinion, Bundrant may be doing as much damage or more than whatever good he is doing–Seems more egotistical on his part than actually advancing the general understanding of bipolar disorder/depression/automatic thoughts battle. In my opinion, it isn’t very impressive, and, likely, for most readers, a waste of reading/thought/guilt space.
My motives are a lot more evil and conscious than that. I wonder if there’s not a danger in bringing greater awareness to destructive people. When I see a short insecure 40 year old guy bullying the entry level kid, I don’t imagine greater awaness helping. On some level he realizes that he is a tense manipulative little guy, and he isn’t going to get a lot out of life.
There’s not a lot of options for people who are unstable jerks. I mean, you can go totally evil, and that’s nice as long as you aren’t insecure about it, or you can face what you are and try to be a better person, but probably not gonna happen if you’re older than 35.
A good and thought provoking article. I was particularly impressed by the comment “I exaggerate my troubles so that they seem impossible to solve. Then, I do not have to make the effort.” as it fits a few people I have met. In response to the negative comments I would say your title clearly states “might be saying”. You are not generalising that people do not have genuine problems and concerns!
