“In between stimulus and response there is a space, in that space lies our power to choose our response in our response lies our growth and our freedom.”

I like this, and I'm going to help myself remember it by making a musical connection with the song "The Space Between Us" (Dave Matthews). This trick might help somebody else.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iwmT3hbdTYA

"The space between
The tears we cry is the laughter that keeps us coming back for more
The space between
The wicked lies we tell to keep us safe from the pain

The space between
The bullets in our fire fight
Is where I’ll be hiding waiting for you

The space between
What’s wrong and right
Is where you’ll find me hiding
Waiting for you

The space between
Your heart and mind
Is the space we’ll fill with time

Having read Viktor Frankl years before I knew about mindfulness meditation, I loved having you draw attention to how his words validate what I now value so much: The space between perceiving, and responding, which gives us room to more mindfully choose how we respond to the world.

After I first heard this quote in the context of mindfulness, I found myself smiling during those precise moments in meditation when I would notice that my busy mind had wandered off...one tiny beat of space...and then the choice to bring my awareness back to the breath instead of becoming caught up in the chatter.

As you (and I, and others) have said here and elsewhere, practicing even those tiny choices on a regular basis (as in mindfulness meditation) rewires our brains so that we become better able to do it "on the fly," even in the middle of a brewing conflict, or when our child is having a tantrum.

Thanks again, Elisha.
