Hi Shannon,
Thanks for this post. I can relate so well with what you are saying, too well actually but that’s why it is so helpful. I am also trying to deal with anxiety issues. It helps to hear about others with a similar experience and to read your ideas for dealing with it. I use some of these and definitely plan to try more and perhaps be more methodical about it.
I really like the idea of later trying to identify the type of anxiety. It’s good to hear that biological is one type because I know I too am hard-wired for anxiety, but somehow just acknowledging that that is what’s going on makes it easier to accept and deal with. I would also add anticipatory anxiety, that is I am anxious about a situation I am anticipating or worrying will occur even though it hasn’t yet and/or is not in the present moment. Reading your post though I think that is also very tied up with legacy anxiety, that is I anticipate recurrence of a situation I didn’t handle well. Now I will try looking at it through this lens and see it as an opportunity to handle it a different way.
Sorry this comment has gotten a little long, but wanted to say thanks. I hope you’ll continue to write about any further ideas you have for dealing with anxiety. Marcy
Yes – there are definitely more categories of anxiety than the ones I listed – anticipatory anxiety is very real!! I am so glad you are finding my experiences with handling anxiety helpful. Anxiety is the WORST! (of course I only say that until depression comes back, then I think it is the worst instead.
Thanks for reading and please keep me posted on how you are doing!

Hi JDee – I’m so glad you found the post helpful and I hope your doc enjoys it too! Merry Christmas to you as well!
Thank you so much Shannon for addressing my question. I’m still not sure how to deal with this for myself, however, I can now see how much shame I carry because of how I view the anxiety. And then I have anxiety about the shame, you know how it goes. Your post does allow me to try some new ways to deal with and number one will be being kind to myself. Thanks again and best wishes to you.
You are so welcome, Suzanne. For what it is worth, sometimes I am still not sure how to address my anxiety either – but what I do know is that I have a full basket of coping tools, many of which can address my anxiety in its different forms when it arises. Keep me posted on how you are doing and if you have any more questions I will do my best to discuss them here.
