In 2011, we held our first “blog party” to celebrate World Mental Health Day on October 10. We had over 80 different bloggers who contributed to the success of increasing awareness about the importance of mental health.

This year, we’re inviting you to join us and the Carter Center’s Mental Health Program for our 2nd annual blog party on Wednesday, October 10, 2012. Together we can help spread the message that mental health is important to all of us.

Participation in the blog party is easy. All you need do is commit to publishing a blog entry on Wednesday, Oct. 10, 2012, about a mental health issue that’s close to your heart. It may be on the topic of access to treatment, resources or support within your local community. It may be on an individual’s personal struggle with a mental health concern. It may be about the prejudice a person faced when discussing the issue with a family member or co-worker. Or it could be on this year’s specific World Mental Health Day topic, depression.

Our goal is to flood the Internet with voices that can help bring mental health to discussions and readers that might not often hear about these issues.

Blog entries work best if they are relatively short (generally under 700 words, but even shorter is fine) and with a clear message or take-away. If you need help crafting your post, we’ll be happy to help.

Even if you don’t currently blog or your organization doesn’t have a blog, not to worry! We will happily publish your entry on Psych Central.

Once you’ve posted your blog entry, simply let us know: blogparty@psychcentral.com

We’ll be posting links to everyone’s entries throughout the day on our World Mental Health Day blog (right here — you’re reading it!): http://blogs.psychcentral.com/mental-health-day/

Please consider joining us this year on World Mental Health Day to help increase awareness and reduce the stigma of mental health diagnosis, access to services, treatment, and support. We believe your contribution would add a valuable and important voice to the campaign.Thank you for your consideration and we look forward to your participation in this event!

Welcome to the World Mental Health Day Blog Party.

Psych Central is proud to host the first blog party devoted to World Mental Health Day, October 10, 2011. Bloggers from around the world will come together on this day to help spread their stories and educate others about mental health concerns, decrease the prejudice and stigma that is often directed toward mental illness, and discuss things that help a person overcome their disorder or mental health concern.

Mental health or emotional health is a big component of our everyday life, yet it often is pushed down or minimized as something that doesn’t really matter. But it connects our thoughts, our feelings and behaviors together. When one of these things gets out of whack, so can our lives.

The World Health Organization (WHO) designated October 10 as World Mental Health Day to help spotlight the lack of care mental disorders often receive around the world. We hope to help increase awareness of these disorders and their treatment through hosting this blog party.

Post the “I’m Blogging for World Mental Health Day” badge on your blog and help proudly spread the word about the importance of mental health. Just copy and paste the badge code below into your post or blog:

How This Works

On October 10, we’ll update a new blog entry here with a list of all the blog posts related to increasing awareness or people’s understanding of treatment for mental health issues and concerns.

Your blog post can be about anything related to mental or emotional health, or its treatment. You can tell your story about how you first learned about your condition, and what kinds of challenges you faced to get treatment for it.

Tweet us @psychcentral to let us know about your blog entry, or email our special email address for this event: blogparty at psychcentral.com

Use the hashtag #mhday on your tweets and remember to follow us on Twitter @psychcentral and Like us on Facebook.
