Is Social Media a Good Agoraphobia and Social Phobia Treatment? #NHBPM
Fifteen Days, 15 Mental Health Humor Cartoons celebrating the National Health Blog Post Month November Blog PARTY: (#NHBPM 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th,6th,7th, 8th, 9th, 10, 11th, 12th,13th, 14th, 15th). As a person with Agoraphobia, today’s cartoon has two edges and both are sharp and cut deep to the heart. I never use to care about my surroundings. I felt at home no matter where I was, I made it home.
Call it “Social Phobia” or whatever, the fact is I could go weeks without ever leaving my house. I know that is not healthy and by the time I realized what is going on, a few more weeks have past. That is where social media has it’s power, it gives a connection to the world that normally, people like me, would shun… But, the down fall is when you build a life around social media and it becomes how you interact. If it is the only human contact then it’s doing more harm than good. It feeds into the Agoraphobic thinking that you’re safe at home or safe with platonic relationships (non-committal friends).
Another down fall is “Agoraphobic Guilt”… If you deal with Agoraphobia, then I’m sure you know what I’m talking about. The guilt that you know that you could be outside, with friends or family. Yet, day in and day out, you only stay in an environment where you feel safe.
Over the past 12 months, I have worked hard to over come this Social Phobia. I actively pursued a new male friend to go fishing with and to hang out with. We have formed a strong friendship and share many of the same ideas and sense of humor. Our families share meals often and we text and talk on the phone. It’s the first time in a while that I actively invested in a friendship and I did it because I needed to get back into society.
What is my point, simply that your Favorite Friday people you should follow are not in your phone, tablet or computer app…Look up, they are right in front of you – reach out and shake their hand and say hello…who knows, you might make a real friend just like I did when I met Benjamin.
Who are your favorite people to follow on social media? (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, etc.)
