Did you know that it was big business that came up with BLACK FRIDAY and Cyber Monday?  Wikipedia says, "'Cyber Monday' is a neologism invented by Shop.org, part of the U.S. trade association National Retail Federation. It was first used within the ecommerce community during the 2005 holiday season."*  I think it has very little to do with selling anything, rather it is the second stage of a 4 part master plan for big business to rule the world.

We need to be wise and make the right choice in our recovery. That does not mean to just follow the crowd, we need to be prudent. I was listening to a talk this past weekend and he used an illustration that made me think that it works well...

Acute Angles Of Mental Illness - How Do They Measure Up?
The one thing you learn quickly about your diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder, Depression, Schizophrenia, Borderline Personality Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or any other number of Mood Disorders and Mental Illnesses is that recovery is full of angles. The twists and turns of our moods and emotions can be measured with an acute angle or a measuring stick. They can be sharp as an angle or sometimes smooth as a line. Acute angles of mental illness, how do they measure up? Let's talk about what we can do if these angles trigger our symptoms.

Constructive Tips for Rhinotillexomaniana – Also Known as Compulsive Nose Picking

Med Bottle: I had a relapse of my Rhinotillexomania.  I was able to focus it constructively and make you a gift.

Rhinotillexomania is one of those anxiety disorders that many would rather NOT talk about.  It can be embarrassing and others may feel shame over the habitual need to pick that booger!  I should know, because when I was a kid I PICKED... Night and day, with every finger and a few toes, I picked me a winner each time.  When you're 8 years old, you may not understand that your shirt sleeve is not meant to be a tissue or a 'snot rag'!

"It's a filthy habit!" Mom always said - and she was right.  Yet, is it just a habit?

Alternative Roads to Mental Health Recovery

What is an Alternatives 2011 Conference?  Each year, the US government funds a conference that gathers hundreds of Americans who are mental health consumers and psychiatric survivors, many of whom are working with peer-run services.  It is very expensive to go, and normally there are a number of sponsorships programs available.  This year there were not many at all and you had to apply early.

Alternatives Conference

To my loyal readers, all 3 of you.  I want to update you on my trip to the Alternatives Conference in Orlando.

I drove up from Punta Gorda leaving at 2:00 p.m. Friday using a friend's truck.  I printed up the Google maps with each street image to reduce the anxiety and stress.  I always get anxious when driving to places I'm not familiar with or flying or traveling in general.  This was doubled having my son with me, since I was worrying about him, too.

We wrote 2 new jokes to add to my stand-up and practiced my act.  It was the first time since the May 2011 DBSA conference that I even thought of the bits (jokes).  The two jokes we thought were funny.  When we finally got to Orlando, following our printed Google maps directions, I told my son to turn on the radio to listen to some music.  He pushed what he thought was the power button, then a screen literately popped out from the radio - It was a GPS screen!

Alternatives Conference: Me and the Open Mic

Open Mic @ Alternatives Conference 2011
Alternatives Conference: Me and the Open Mic
This past week I attended one the largest Mental health consumers/peers conferences that I've ever gone to. How special it was to be part of the 25th annual Alternatives conference, the oldest national mental health conference organized by and for mental health consumers/survivors!  It was held October 26-30, 2011 at the Caribe Royale Orlando.

I worked hard to find a way there but it seemed like I wouldn't be able to go until I got a last minute sponsor push.  Although I missed the art show, I was able to get there Friday night and did mysStand-up act for the open mic....OUCH, did I bomb or what?
