News Flash: Cutting and Self-injury on the Rise

Psychology-Cartoons-for-Mental-health-humor-by-Chato-b-stewart-150x150.jpg Cutting/Self-Injury is not just a “teenage girl’s” problem.  Men/ boys do it, too. It is no secret that I, like most of you, grew up tormented in one way or another.  For me, I was the outcast with severe “father issues.”

One of my mal-productive coping mechanisms was cutting, and it started early for me. This violent self-mutilation was my way out of my inner turmoil. I hid it from my family for years. I can remember the emotions that led up to the act, but I can never remember the pain.  To me, that pain felt better than what was going on in my head.

An ER doctor once almost picked up on my “secret” when I punched a cement wall after breaking up with a girl. I broke a bone in my hand.  The ER doctor had somehow noticed scars on my upper arms and legs during his assessment.  He asked me about them but I knew he did not believe my story, nor did he believe my story about how I broke bones in my hand.

Cutting would be replaced when I discovered burning/branding one night.  The pain was more intense and that matched the emotional pain I was feeling.  Happy that is all in the past! It has been 3 and half years since I last had an episode of self-harm.  Something I’m very proud of and why I’m telling my story of self-injury.  It can be beat, so we can stop beating ourselves.

Today, I asked a few of my Facebook friends about something everyone should know about Cutting and Self-injury?

Dr. Deborah Serani said “Cutting is a way to manage self-punishment, self-hate or self-nurturance. In its simplest form, cutting is a physical solution to a psychic wound.”  Facebook Page

Jon Press said “Self injury may seem like a quick release but it only compounds the hurt, and leaves scars that only exacerbate guilt and shame.

Just Deb feels “Cutting doesn’t necessarily mean you’re trying to kill yourself. In my case, it has always been a coping mechanism, a way to release what’s bottled up inside, I compare it to a breath of fresh air. Temporary relief to a life-long problem. They’re my battle scars.

Via Twitter:

@selfharmquotes selfharmfacts say’s everyone should know about Cutting and Self-injury “it’s addicting and a process to heal and recover but you can recover.. as well the urges never go away but learn to live with”.  Cutting and Self-injury, “its addicting and hard to recover but it can be successful as well the urges never go away u learn to live with and control”.

I watched this video and I was surprised that SNL’s Darrell Hammond also dealt with self-injury, too.  For more information on cutting see: Cutting: The Quiet Epidemic and Cutting and Self-Injury
