This week we are highlighting just this one cartoon.
Sign: Future Site of Suicide Barrier Net – Pending Funding
Caption: Please Don’t Jump… yet!!!
1-800-SUICIDE 1-800-237-TALK
FACT: More people have jumped from the Golden Gate bridge than any other location.
In 2008, The Golden Gate Bridge’s suicide barrier was finally realized when the design of a stainless steel net hung beneath the iconic bridge span was approved… Or at least we thought.
Speaking to an OFFICIAL at the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District office, I was told there is “NO suicide barrier up” at this time! She went on to say, “Yes it was approved, but there is more to it then the approval, new plans are needed and they need to be approved that alone with take 18 months” in the end she said even when that is all said and done THEN they have to find a way to pay for it.
She used the words “Pending Funding” a lot as to why there is no barrier up as of yet. I’m still confused! I’m really not sure if there is a net up until a barrier is up or if the net is considered the barrier? So I called back and talked to a gentleman in the same office. “There is NO suicide net up,“, but there is a temporary net up for workers and construction. The suicide net is a long way off and as he said it “LACKS FUNDING” with a price tag of over 20 million dollars. I Asked if that net would save a jumper… he did not think so… He could not comment on the 16-year-old who jumped this past weekend.
Here is the Official reply to my question: Could you tell me if the Suicide Barrier is in place as of yet?
“I am sorry to report that it is not. You can follow the progress here: http://www.ggbsuicidebarrier.org”
Mary Currie, Public Affairs Director – Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District
Can a net or barrier really help? Psych Central has written previously about how we believe that bridges should be proofed against suicide and that a human life is worth more than a slightly-obstructed view.
How many lives is a Barrier worth? (to be continued)
