PeaceLove Studios for Mental Health Advocates and Artists

In my last post, we talked about “validation” and how we all appreciate it and how it contributes to our own self-worth… Today, I got a Facebook Friend request and message that I felt was validating:

Chato…. I just found you by accident on the internet… please call me or if you have an agent… have him contact me…. I work for PeaceLove Studios in Pawtucket RI… my cell is 202-***-****…  thx much!

Now normally I would have waited until I researched this person and their organization before I e-mailed or called them back.  I decided to call her right on the spot. And I’m so glad I did!  Maureen and I talked about the organization. In short, “PeaceLove is a growing community of mental health advocates and artists creating conversations of acceptance, understanding and hope.”

We talked about humor as a positive creative tool in educating and giving hope.  I cannot stress enough the importance of a good sense of humor as a necessary tool in our recovery process.  We talked for a while and she asked if I could submit something for their upcoming public artwork display.   The cartoon above is not my entry. It is just how I felt after reading and listening more about the organization.  I picked up my pen and pencil this is what I ended up with on paper.  The caption is inspired by the 1989 Rob Reiner film When Harry Met Sally… but the similarities end with the title.

Within our “mental health community” we have many extremely talented artists…  Then you have people like me who have no talent… What PeaceLove has created is a platform not only for the talented artists, but for anybody who wants to express themselves artistically.

I encourage everyone to take a moment and check out their website: http://www.peacelovestudios.com (Note: it’s a Flash website.)
They are located at 200 Main St. in Pawtucket, RI.

Personally, I enjoyed watching many of the videos on their YouTube channel. Gave me a better understanding of the organization’s goals and what they’ve done in the community. http://www.youtube.com/peacelovestudios1

P. S.

I asked Maureen what video she’s saw about me that inspired her to reach out to contact me via Facebook…I was praying it was NOT my rendition of Rebecca Black’s song Friday (Shrink-Day).   Fortunately, It was not!  She saw my DBSA 1st place winning video for the Facing Us 2009 Video Contest.  It’s because of that video, I’ve been invited to the 2011 DBSA conference.
