Mary Currie, spokeswoman for the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, said “the bridge district does not track nonfatal leaps” but Currie estimated that 278 people took their lives from the span between 2000 and 2010.  About 677 people were deterred (saved) after going to the bridge intending to harm themselves… Thirty-two people committed suicide last year by jumping off the Golden Gate Bridge.  Marin County Coroner Ken Holmes’ announced that 31 people jumped to their deaths in 2009.  In 2008, 34 people committed suicide by jumping from the bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge is considered one of the world’s most popular spots for suicides, with a jump “survival” rate of only about 2 percent.  With two jump survivors in the last month, I think it’s safe to say the bridge has met it’s 2% quota… No need for any one else to tempt fate.

More education and preventative measures are, in my opinion, the only way to slow down suicide. Unfortunately, nothing will ever completely stop it. Even still, I’m a huge fan of a jump net or barrier on bridges and high places! Nothing beats an informed family or friend that knows you’re in crisis and knows who to call or what to do to save your life! Sadly, sometimes even they can’t stop it.
