Wife: Did you figure out our next Bipolar domicile yet?
Title: Thinking Outside The Box
Mental Illness, Bipolar, Depression and the Homeless sometime, NO… many times gohand in hand. It is extremely difficult to keep a job if we are experiencing an “episode.” How can we pay the rent when we are off in la-la-land or too depressed to even take care of our own basic hygiene and can’t even get out of bed or leave the house?!
“My family was evicted because I was in the hospital, we were almost homeless and used up every penny we has saved” – James
“I lost my job of 5 years when I got help… I had my home taken away too just cause I was depressed, that did not help me at all!” – Lisa
“We make less than $400 a month for a family of three due to job loss followed by underemployment, and would be homeless if it were not for relatives taking us in.”- Trish
What can we do to make sure we don’t end up homeless or if we are homeless, what can we do to get back on our feet? There is no one easy answer to this question, but I can tell you the foundation is recovery!!
Pursue treatment. Despite the long-term nature of some mental disorders, with appropriate treatment many sufferers can have stable, productive lives. Unfortunately, many languish for years without getting help. Just as a serious heart condition requires a heart specialist, mental illness needs the attention of those who know how to treat such conditions. Psychiatrists, for example, can prescribe medicine that when taken consistently can help control mood, ease anxiety, and straighten out distorted thinking patterns
Thinking outside the box with mental health will help us seek the right type of wellness program that will work for us. Not all wellness plans work for every person, so don’t just try one, two or ten. Be willing and determined to try…keep trying till you find one that works for you!!
What works for you?!
