Exposed Massive Medicare Fraud leave Mentally with out hope

A Medicare Fraud Operation was exposed in Miami.  U.S. authorities touted the case as “the largest Medicare fraud scheme ever perpetrated by a single criminal enterprise.”

The Associated Press / ABC News: “The alleged scam is ‘unlike anything we’ve seen before in terms of the nature and size of the scheme,’ said Assistant Attorney General Lanny Breuer. … Authorities are still investigating whether the company actually withheld medication from patients or just doctored the charts. The therapy was supposed to be intensive counseling for patients suffering acute mental illness and are on the verge of hospitalization, but federal officials said ATC didn’t give any counseling. Instead, patients were bused in and sat in rooms watching TV and playing games, authorities said” (Kennedy, 10/21)
MIAMI (AP) — Authorities are charging the nation’s largest chain of community mental health centers with Medicare fraud. They say the company preyed on patients with severe dementia to bill $200 million for services that it never delivered. Prosecutors say American Therapeutic and its sister companies faked charts. And they say the companies paid the owners of assisted living facilities to bring patients to mental health centers for therapy sessions that were never held.

Between A Rock and A Hard Place mental Illness image clipart

In April 29, 2002 the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health was established by George W. Bush.  Highlighting this fact about stigma:

“Stigma leads to isolation, and discourages people from seeking the treatment they need. Political leaders, health care professionals, and all Americans must understand and send this message: Mental disability is not a scandal; it is an illness. And like physical illness, it is treatable, especially when treatment comes early.”

The very next year Michael F. Hogan, Ph.D. the Chairman, President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health submitted the findings with the FinalReport.pdf.

2010 Mental Health Humor Dont Run With humans

What have I told you!  Do you want to poke your eye out?

A Universal Truth: Don’t Run With Humans

A Universal Truth? The only time I’ve ever heard that term was during all my NAMI mentor training.  Years ago, at the Peer to Peer, C.A.R.E. and Family programs and then again in the Connections training.  It got me thinking one day about other Universal Truths. That’s why I drew the above cartoon about this Universal Truth… NO running with scissors…(an important Universal Truth, in my household, as a Father of Four!)  What Universal Truths have “positively” impacted your life or family?

Mental Health Break with Team Coco’s Webcam

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

In what has to be  one of the funniest ways to promote the new Conan late night show on TBS,  Team Coco has for the next 24 hours a live cam showing all sorts of goofy things!!

With a live webcam in a stairwell hallway, Team Coco wants people to tune into a typical day at the Team Coco headquarters. They are broadcasting for  24 hours starting October 20th at 1pm EST and ending on the 21st.

For my own Mental Health Break today, I thought I would tune in for a little bit. What happened next ending up eating up most of my day. Why can we not turn away from a train wreck? I decided to follow the Web cam until I saw Conan O’Brien…It is hard to turn off!
