Every one of us has a creative side. We don’t always know that we have it, because we don’t pay attention to it. Or we think others are so much better, so there’s no point in even trying.

There will always be someone who is better at what we do. We can’t allow ourselves to compare the talent we have to what others do. It’s about your own innate expression of self.

As the great artist Martha Graham said:

“There is a vitality, a life force, that is translated through you into action, and there is only one of you in all time. This expression is unique, and if you block it, it be lost. The world will not have it. It is not your business to compare it with other expression. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open.”

Tapping into your creativity doesn’t mean that you have to be the next art sensation or rock star. It simply means to expand your own creative side, and with care.

Have the courage to make something that seems imperfect. Experiment. Play.

It doesn’t have to be a piece of fine art. Make a scrap book. Build a sand castle. Write a poem.

Many, many artists channel their insecurities through their art. They express in it all the conflict, all the doubt, all the inner turmoil they experience. It drives them.

In psychology, transforming anxiety and sadness into art is a healthy and mature way of processing emotional unrest. Rather than going out and abusing sex or alcohol (or food, as it happens more and more), it is very much preferable to express the issues at hand in an artistic way.

If you want to take pictures, take pictures. If you want to jump up and down, arms flailing, do that. If you want to create an action paining, Jackson Pollock style, go ahead. If you like to sing but feel insecure about your voice, put on headphones and scream your lungs out.

Make art it in a way that means something to you. Bring some concentration to what you do. And have fun with it. There is no need for perfectionism. Just create. There is a playful side in all of us.
