I was raised in this same way and it still to this day hurts me. I didn't have the uber-lavish lifestyle that those bratty 16-year-olds but I didn't need that. Everything I asked for my parents gave me and never put limits on anything. And I have explained all of this to them yet they still don't get it and don't understand that that is NOT the right way to parent.

Terry - you are so right. I don't understand why parents don't spend time with their children and teach them important lessons instead of giving them money and keys and letting them go wherever they please. If you don't mind informing us, how did you learn the hard way? I am still in the process of learning. Thank you.

I was brought up a bit like this, and had to learn the hard way to look after myself. Why dont we indulge our children with good family fun (when they are behaving)? It is much more fun to play a board game or play at a park or go fishing or save up and go on a special holiday and teach your child about things and lavish them with praise and attention when they are good.
