Reiser: I am so glad your generation does not have this circa-1960s view of masculinity. It's absurd. Your generation will be much better off without it.

John: I doubt that knowledge of Terry Bradshaw's depression will make you feel better. Sounds like you are enlightened and open minded enough to have sought help years ago. But there are many, many men out there who need role models to show them that depression has nothing to do with their masculinity.

"Friends and neighbors tell me how the men in their lives are self-destructing. They tell me the horrible things you say that you cannot possibly mean."

Sounds like you need some new friends. This is a predictable circa-1960s view of masculinity as stoicism. Guys are depressed. Girls are depressed. You've been writing for the Palm Beach Post for just a few years longer than I've been alive, and I can say with confidence that your generation's gender roles and ideas about feminism/masculinity are vastly different.

Huh? I'm supposed to feel better because a celebrity has depression? 30+ years of meds and talk therapy haven't done anything and I'm supposed to feel better because Terry Bradshaw suffers from depression??

I'm missing something here. Tell me again. How does this work?
