Mad But Glad

Very good UK documentary following Nick van Bloss, a pianist who has Tourette’s syndrome and thrives by using the instrument to channel creative energy and manage his condition. Delves into classic questions about the link between creativity and madness (and dopamine), with animated brain scans and comparisons to some creative correlates of autism, mania, and Parkinson’s. Part 1, and part 2.

Dr. Trevor Robbins at the 2008 Staglin Music Festival for Mental Health, talking about using cognitive enhancement drugs for psychiatric disorders.

The New Brain Science of Cognitive Enhancement: Future Reality or Fool’s Gold?

At the 2008 Staglin Music Festival for Mental Health, opening for the Pointer Sisters, Trevor Robbins (Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Cambridge University) talks about using cognitive enhancement drugs including atomoxetine, modafanil, Ritalin, d-cycloserine, and ampakines to treat diminished cognitive function in psychiatric disorders. The slides are mostly too blurry to read, unfortunately, but the audio is fine. The solar-powered, organic-farmed Staglin Family Vineyard in Napa Valley organizes fabulous lecture/concert fundraisers for mental health research. Their next event on September 12, 2009 features Helen Mayberg, Pat Benatar with Neil Giraldo, and chef Staffan Terje. Hope to see you there!

description A US government vodcast complete with transcript, though it’s not indexed. A National Institutes of Health (NIH) co-worker developed Parkinson’s Disorder, and is featured in a third segment interview. “Host Joe Balintfy: Often promoting the importance of medical research through the NIH Radio News Service and NIH Research Radio Podcast, Bill made the decision to volunteer for a clinical trial, and was selected for the surgical treatment: DBS, which is major brain surgery.” He and his neurosurgeon then describe the surgery. Dr. Pancrazio says, “But it really is something that’s very new, it’s something that, you know, our society has a lot of questions about. What does it mean for us and it’s something that I think that every patient who’s participating in a trial is a pioneer.” The final segment of the vodcast interviews an NIMH researcher about stress.
