Confession: I have been planning a tattoo around the Dave Matthews Band Fire Dancer for, oh, roughly five years now.
Why is it taking so long? Well, because 1) it’s not exactly a unique tattoo among DMB fans so I want to figure out a way to make mine personal for me, and 2) I’m an indecisive perfectionist.
Why am I doing this? I think we all know the answer to that one.
I’ll be the first to admit I’m obsessed with DMB. It’s a healthy obsession, mind you – I’m more annoying that I am dangerous (in other words, I wouldn’t stalk the band, but I have been known to harass non-fans with things like the “DMB Song of the Day” I recently started on Facebook for one of my friends).
That’s why the fan tattoos featured in a semi-recent article over at The Frisky don’t surprise me at all. Sure, some of the tattoos themselves surprise me (well, more like the subjects of the tattoos – one is Britney Spears circa her very public mental breakdown and I don’t even want to talk about the Patrick Swayze one), but, to each his own.
I’d never get a celebrity’s portrait tattooed on me, but, clearly I’m not the only fan obsessed enough with her favorite band or celebrity to permanently mark her body with something representative of that admiration. That’s not what attracted me to the article or pictures, though; what caught my attention was The Frisky’s tweet about it on the mag’s Twitter.
“[...] a little more than just obsessed!”
This made me laugh a little, and start to wonder…

You’ll like this one, Alicia. Michelle, who is in our Playhouse group, has been mulling over getting the Golden Snitch tattooed on herself for a couple of years. I hope she does it.
I would get a tattoo…especially seeing as I’m the only one in the family who doesn’t have one. Even my mom has one…two, actually. But I’d want to be VERY sure I wouldn’t regret it in 50 years!
I hope she gets it! I used to joke about getting a lightening bolt (though, not on my forehead, haha – well, actually, I DID used to joke about that, too, but only to people who I thought would believe it, haha). That’s be really cool of her!
Yeah, the whole “make sure I won’t regret it” thing is tricky. Fortunately, it was easy for me because I chose something I’d loved forever (sunflowers) and knew I’d continue loving. (It’s the same with the Fire Dancer.) But, thinking of something from scratch would make me nervous.
Have you considered lyrics or quotes? I know of a certain PDF of an unfinished novel that’s overflowing with things for you to choose from…
I read a few topics. I respect your work and added blog to favorites.
I have a coffee cup with a cool sketch of Elvis Costello (I am a huge fan) that I have considered having tattooed somewhere but I keep thinking that might be a little nuts. I have 3 tattoos, one of them is extremely lame but it on my upper thigh so few people ever see it and if anyone asks what it is I just say “it’s soemthing dumb I did when I was 20″. I feel like it’s a souvenir of a time when I could do stuff like that and not have to answer to anyone.
