So, Van Halen AREN’T Ready To Kill Each Other
I was complaining because I couldn’t get anyone to drive to Pennsylvania with me for another DMB show, and he was bragging about a then-upcoming Gov’t Mule show he was flying to Myrtle Beach to see – the usual.
Or, so I thought, until he laughed and said he was glad he got to see Van Halen before they killed each other.
I felt it was an appropriate response. He just laughed again.
“They’ve postponed the rest of the tour. I knew it was going to happen. They can’t stand each other.”
Well, apparently Rolling Stone thought the same thing last month, though now the magazine reports Van Halen, David Lee Roth, and the rest of the band are just in over their heads.
According to guitarist Eddie Van Halen:
We bit off more than we could chew. This record took a lot out of us. And we went on tour earlier than we wanted to so we could play Madison Square Garden, and that threw the schedule out of whack.
Singer David Lee Roth pretty much co-signed, though he was a bit more poetic:
We bit off way more than we could chew when it came to scheduling. The band is winning, but our schedule has been sidelined for unnecessary roughness.
Of course, I don’t have any backstage knowledge of Van Halen’s dynamics, but I think – in addition to biting off more than they can chew – assuming the guys are a little frustrated with one another (especially given the history of some of the members’ dramatic departures) isn’t too far a stretch.
Postponing the remaining dates to take some time seems like a good move.
When was a time you had to take a break and put some things on hold so you could recharge?
