Celebrity Psychings

The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) ended 2011 – or began 2012, depending on how you look at it – with a pretty exciting event:

The launch of the organizations new Celebrity Honorary Advisory Board.

According to the official announcement, the goal behind creating the Celebrity Honorary Advisory Board is to connect with and learn from others who live with mental illness.

Says DBSA Board Chair-elect Lucinda Jewel:

All of the members of our Honorary Advisory Board exemplify that people living with mental health conditions can and do live extraordinary lives unlimited by a diagnosis.

The board consists of:

  • Jessie Close, sister of actress Glenn Close and co-founder of Bring Change 2 Mind (BC2M).
  • Award-winning actress and longtime mental health advocate Patty Duke, who’s second book, A Brilliant Madness, explores living with manic depressive illness.
  • Marya Hornbacher, an award-winning journalist and author of New York Times best-seller Madness: A Bipolar Life.
  • Kay Redfield Jamison, PhD, psychiatry professor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and codirector of the Johns Hopkins Mood Disorders Center, as well as the author and award recipient.
  • Former NFL All-Pro punter Greg Montgomery, who’s been sharing his story of living with bipolar disorder through a variety of venues over the last several years.
  • Andrew Solomon, an award-winning author and board member for various campaigns including he National Mental Health Awareness Campaign, the Depression Center of the University of Michigan, and the Larry Kramer Initiative for Gay and Lesbian Studies at Yale University.

We are immensely honored to have these talented and inspiring individuals as members of our new Honorary Advisory Board, and even more appreciative of the work each has done to increase the understanding of, and to reduce the stigma associated with, depression and bipolar disorder.
