Former Hokie Superstar Launches Mental Health Foundation

Monday, August 15th, 2011

Back in 2007, the Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University – or, Virginia Tech – experienced the deadliest shooting incident by a single gunman in the history of the United States: The Virginia Tech Massacre. The gunman, 23-year-old Seung-Hui Cho, who’d been diagnosed with anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder, killed 32 people and injured 17 more before committing suicide.

No doubt you remember it.

Yet, from that devastation, a spark of hope was ignited.

“Touchdown Tommy” Edwards, a former Hokie football superstar, was visiting his parents in nearby Christiansburg, VA, when the massacre began. Like so many people across America, Edwards watched in horror as the death toll continued adding up.

When it stopped at 33, which is his old football jersey number, he was stunned -

- and ready to take action.

Weekend Reading: 15 Funny Celebrity Quotes

Friday, August 12th, 2011

Whew! It’s been a heavy past few weeks here at Celebrity Psychings (and across the globe, of course).

Amy Winehouse died and Russell Brand responded with wise words about how the world views addiction.

Aberdeen, Washington decided naming a bridge after Kurt Cobain would be glorifying drug use and suicide, country music star Campbell announced his Alzheimer’s Disease diagnosis and final album, and The Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers may or may not have tried to commit suicide but was indeed rushed to a London hospital for treatment after an overdose.

I think it’s time for a little humor, don’t you?

Miley Cyrus Tattoo Shows Support For Gay Rights

Wednesday, August 10th, 2011

Miley Cyrus, who has been vocal about her thoughts on lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) rights in the past (specifically, the injustice she finds in a court system that bans gay marriage but finds Casey Anthony not guilty of murder), recently made a simple – but permanent – statement about gay relationships and marriage (and, if I should be so bold, equality in general).

She tattooed an equal sign on the ring finger of her right hand (pictured right).

Near the end of last month, Cyrus tweeted a picture of her new ink, with the words “All LOVE is equal” accompanying the yfrog image. She then responded to naysayers by pointing out that only God can judge others.

Amy Winehouse Foundation Plans Underway

Monday, August 8th, 2011

Although Mitch Winehouse mentioned it during a US Weekly interview shortly after her death, I held off on posting about a possible Amy Winehouse Foundation because, well, a grieving family member might not have been the best source at the time.

It’s not uncommon for loved ones to start a foundation in the name of someone they’ve lost to a particular problem, but we often make big plans when a loved one dies.

Apparently, though, big plans really are underway.

According to People.com, Mitch and Janis Winehouse have decided to turn Amy’s 10-room, $4 million London home (pictured top left, with mourners gathered for her memorial) into headquarters for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, and the Foundation will receive some getting-off-the-ground help from the proceeds of Amy’s “Body and Soul” duet with Tony Bennett, which will soon be released as a charity single.

Young Adult Authors Speak Against Bullying In ‘Dear Bully’

Friday, August 5th, 2011

Thanks to the It Gets Better campaign, we’ve heard from numerous actors, musicians, and other celebrities who’ve spoken out against bullying (specifically in the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, or LGBT, teen community).

Now, we get to hear from young adult authors.

Between the covers of Dear Bully: 70 Authors Tells Their Stories, young adult authors like R.L. Stine, Ellen Hopkins, Carolyn Mackler, Mo Williems, and Eric Luper share essays, comics, and free verse describing their past relationships with bullying -

- as victims, bullies, and bystanders.

The book won’t hit shelves until September 6, 2011, but that’s still plenty of time to get it to your favorite teen before the school year flies into full swing.

Also, a portion of the book’s proceeds will go to STOMP Out Bullying, a national anti-bullying and cyber bullying program for kids and teens and a partner of The Jed Foundation and MTV’s Love Is Louder campaign.

For more information about Dear Bully, visit the book’s official Facebook page and website, www.dearbully.com, where you’ll find videos of celebs like Ben Folds, Justin Timberlake, and the cast of Glee speaking out about bullying and cyber bullying.

Addiction Is A Disease That Kills: Lessons From Russell Brand

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Maybe you’ve kept up with the tragic death of Amy Winehouse.

Maybe you just pay attention on Twitter, Facebook, or the news feed of whatever homepage you use.

Maybe you heard someone mention in on the radio, during the days following her death.

Whatever the case, chances are you’ve at least heard about “For Amy,” the dedication actor and comedian Russell Brand wrote and posted on his own blog a couple of weekends ago.

More than a dedication to his friend Amy Winehouse, “For Amy” is a dedication to society’s desperate need to recognize addiction for what it is: A disease that kills.

POLL: Would Kurt Cobain Bridge Glorify Drug Use And Suicide?

Monday, August 1st, 2011

Speaking of members of the 27 Club

Rolling Stone reports that most of the city council over in Aberdeen, Washington decided to veto naming a bridge after Kurt Cobain, former lead singer of Nirvana.

(Whether or not the city still has this “Welcome to Aberdeen: Come As You Are” sign up, I do not know.)

Although the city’s local parks board recommended the project, ultimately the city council decided naming a bridge after Kurt Cobain (who, in addition to substance abuse problems, reportedly struggled with mental health issues):

…would glorify Cobain’s drug use and suicide.

So, instead, they’re naming a strip of land after Cobain…

…and this strip of land is near a park where a guitar and statue memorialize Cobain.
