Although Mitch Winehouse mentioned it during a US Weekly interview shortly after her death, I held off on posting about a possible Amy Winehouse Foundation because, well, a grieving family member might not have been the best source at the time.
It’s not uncommon for loved ones to start a foundation in the name of someone they’ve lost to a particular problem, but we often make big plans when a loved one dies.
Apparently, though, big plans really are underway.
According to People.com, Mitch and Janis Winehouse have decided to turn Amy’s 10-room, $4 million London home (pictured top left, with mourners gathered for her memorial) into headquarters for the Amy Winehouse Foundation, and the Foundation will receive some getting-off-the-ground help from the proceeds of Amy’s “Body and Soul” duet with Tony Bennett, which will soon be released as a charity single.
The Foundation’s official statement isn’t expected to be released until September 14 (Amy’s birthday), but for now those involved say the Foundation will act as “a charity organization to help children in need” and will “help thousands of people.”
Given the speculation around the Amy Winehouse cause of death, and the statement below made by Mitch to US Weekly in the beginning, I don’t think substance abuse is a far leap:
[...] to help those struggling with substance abuse. In this country, if you cannot afford a private rehabilitation clinic, there is a two year waiting list for help… We are trying to change that.
Mitch Winehouse tweeted that he’d keep his followers up to date with details as they become available (follow him @mitchwinehouse).
