Adam Levine is just not feelin’ the music industry these days (well, parts of it, anyway) and he is not shy about admitting it.
Yesterday, the Maroon 5 frontman and music coach on The Voice tweeted that the MTV’s Video Music Awards (VMAs) was “the one day a year MTV still pretends to care about music” (and the followed up with some choice phrases for the channel).
Not to be outdone, MTV immediately followed up by asking Levine if he’d be “tuning in 9/8c tomorrow night” and salted the wound by reminding Levine he wasn’t so above the VMAs when Maroon 5 won its own Moonman…
…back in 2004.
Ouch.
This little back-and-forth comes in the wake of Levine’s less-than-rave reviews about how American Idol (you know, that singing competition that came along something like 10 years before NBC launched The Voice this past spring) does what he considers is going out of its way to hide the sexuality of its contestants.
What’s always pissed me off about Idol is wanting to mask that, for that to go unspoken. You can’t be publicly gay? At this point? On a singing competition? Give me a break. You can’t hide basic components of these people’s lives. (Out)
In Levine’s defense, well – I can’t remember the last time MTV played music videos. As in, more than one, back-to-back, just because.
Too, Idol’s never been all that vocal about its contestants’ sexualities, it’s true. Yet, unless there’s some kind of contract clause those contestants have to sign, swearing to keep their sexuality a secret, then, I don’t really see the point on this one.
In any event – RAWR! Take it easy the rest of the weekend, Levine. I probably won’t watch the VMAs either (unless they’re promising some sort of super hot Breaking Dawn preview, then I might need to tune in…do they do that for the music awards? I can’t remember), so hit me up.
