Weekend Reading: Kara DioGuardi Pens ‘A Helluva High Note’

Friday, May 6th, 2011

Newbie American Idol judges Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez, coupled with veteran dawg Randy Jackson, might be entertaining us so much during Season 10 that we’ve forgotten about former Idol judge Kara DioGuardi.

However, DioGuardi isn’t fading into the background any time soon.

The award-winning singer-songwriter, who has worked with such artists as Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Pink, and (raaaaaaaandom) Theory of a Deadman, and who helps out with the substance abuse service organization Phoenix House, has just released what’s being touted as a “daringly honest” memoir, A Helluva High Note: Surviving Life, Love, and American Idol.

According to the book’s description, the memoir is:

[...] an intimate anthem about living, creating, loving, stumbling, picking herself up again, and ultimately succeeding. It is a moving chronicle of the experiences that have inspired her songs and given her the resilience and perspective to become the confidant, accomplished, adventurous warrior she is today.

Emma Watson Denies Reports Of Bullying At Brown University

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

There’s been some speculation that one of Hogwarts’ finest is leaving school due to bullying.

And not Hogwarts, mind you, but Rhode Island’s Brown University.

21-year-old Emma Watson, who has played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movie series since the release of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone in 2001, has attended Brown University for the past two years (Granger would be so proud). However, when the starlet’s spokeswoman announced she wouldn’t be spending her third year at Brown, rumors began flying that Watson had chose to leave because her classmates were bullying her.

Most notably, they would chant “Ten points for Gryffindor!” when Watson correctly answered a question in class.

(Really?)

Still, the bullying – as well as the Gryffindor comments – apparently never happened.

Mental Health Month: Lessons From Catherine Zeta-Jones

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

For this week’s “Mental Health Month: Lessons From…” we’re looking at Catherine Zeta-Jones, the award-winning actress who was recently treated for Bipolar II Disorder.

Of course, the fact that she was treated for Bipolar II isn’t why we can learn a lesson from her.

It isn’t even the fact that she spoke about it.

The reason we can learn a lesson from her is the fact that her first personal statement after treatment involved encouraging others to seek help, and reminding them that there’s no shame in doing so.

So what’s the lesson?

Take care of yourself.

Mental Health Month: 3 Ways To Advocate For Mental Health

Sunday, May 1st, 2011

Today marks the beginning of Mental Health Month!

Since 1949, Mental Health Month has been raising awareness about mental wellness and mental health.

That’s more than 60 years of helping people better understand mental illness, how to take care of their own mental health and act as caregivers for others, and busting mental health stigma.

Mental Health Month runs from May 1 to May 31. Of course that doesn’t mean May is the only time you can (and should!) be active in mental health advocacy, but this annual spotlight can give you the boost you need to start really shining as a mental health advocate.
