It seems some Celebrity Rehab critics are calling for the VH1 show to be shut down.
Drew Grant over at Salon claims that although Dr. Drew Pinksy means well, the show puts entertainment above recovery.
Although this claim comes in the wake of Mike Starr’s death, Grant assures us the passing of the former Alice In Chains bassist has nothing to do with why he believes Celebrity Rehab should come to an end.
(Mike Starr appeared on the ninth season of Celebrity Rehab and then later on Sober House, which documented his transition from rehab back into everyday life.)
Grant points out that if every rehab that loses a former patient to drugs shuts down, there’d be no facilities left. Instead, Grant notes the show has a “warped sense of priorities,” places emphasis on “creating the perfect storm of volatile and absurd characters” in order to keep ratings up, and that any patients who truly suffer from “celebrity narcissism” are being hurt rather than helped by the cameras shoved in their faces.
In order for “Celebrity Rehab” to survive, it needs to decide what it wants to be: a show about recovering drug addicts and alcoholics, or a show about the addiction of celebrity. Because right now, [Dr. Drew's] not helping anyone.
What do you think? Based on what you know about Celebrity Rehab, do you think the show should be shut down? Or, is it salvageable even if it helps only one person?
Sound off in the poll!
