In the past, he’s taken aim at George Michael and has become BFFs with Eminem – both in the name of alcoholism and drug abuse – and now Sir Elton John has set his sights on longtime pal and touring mate Billy Joel.
According to an interview in the latest issue of Rolling Stone (on newsstands today), Elton John has a few sobering things to say to and about Billy Joel, all for the sake of tough love.
In addition to speculating about whether Joel’s inability to ink another song is due to laziness or fear, John comments on the number of canceled tours they’ve had, the alcoholism and various other illnesses that’ve led to the cancellations, and the lightweight rehabs Joel has attended in the past.
I love you, Billy, and this is tough love. Billy, you have your demons and you’re not going to get rid of them at rehab light. You’ve got to be serious. People adore you, they love you and respect you. You should be able to do something better than what you’re doing now.
Personally, I think Elton John’s message to Billy Joel is a good – and clear – one. However, I wonder about its vehicle.
Did Elton John really need to blast his “tough love” message to Billy Joel so publicly? Even though it was essentially for a good cause, did that disrespect Billy Joel? Or, because we’re talking about “tough love” and someone’s health and life here, does privacy take a back seat?
Sound off!
