Appearances Don’t Always Matter: Lessons From Lady Gaga

Friday, February 11th, 2011

So what if we’ve already done one “Lessons From Lady Gaga” post?

There’s no limit, okay?

Last weekend, an ecstatic Lady Gaga tweeted that even though “they” used to call her “rabbit teeth” in school, she’s gonna be on the freaking cover of Vogue this March, just like a “real live [...] BEAUTY QUEEN!”

Of course, Lady Gaga – a.k.a Stefani Germanotta – has plenty more to be grateful for besides her impressive ability to keep moving forward and succeeding despite naysayers.

Not only is there some buzz that she’ll do pretty darn well at the 2011 Grammy Awards this Sunday (she has a decent shot, what with being nominated for six awards) but “Born This Way,” the first single off her new album of the same name, hits airwaves today.

Black Swan: Like Taking Someone Else’s Acid Trip

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

So, after a few weeks of reading a gabizillion amazing reviews (undoubtedly why it’s racked up so many awards and nominations) and debating on whether I really wanted to fork over the $7 to watch it (hey, times are tough and I’ve had plenty of “OMGaaaahhhhh do I really have another hour left of sitting in this theater?!” moments), I finally went to see Black Swan last weekend.

My own review? One word: WOW.

But it’s not my own Black Swan movie review or how I felt about the film that’s stuck with me since then.

Instead, it’s the playful (or so I thought) Black Swan review from the friend I went with that’s kept me thinking about the movie. Specifically, of course, how it relates to mental health.

(WARNING: Possible spoilers after the jump.)

The White Stripes: Art And Music Can Last Forever

Monday, February 7th, 2011

Music fans (and those who pay attention to Twitter’s trending topics) undoubtedly caught wind of The White Stripes’ official breakup announcement last week.

Originally, I read about the breakup over at Rolling Stone.

However, the article included excerpts so intriguing I had to head to the duo’s website and read the thing in its entirety for myself.

Which was, (maybe) unexpectedly, profound.

POLL: Elton John And Billy Joel: Tough Love Or Disrespect?

Friday, February 4th, 2011

In the past, he’s taken aim at George Michael and has become BFFs with Eminem – both in the name of alcoholism and drug abuse – and now Sir Elton John has set his sights on longtime pal and touring mate Billy Joel.

According to an interview in the latest issue of Rolling Stone (on newsstands today), Elton John has a few sobering things to say to and about Billy Joel, all for the sake of tough love.

In addition to speculating about whether Joel’s inability to ink another song is due to laziness or fear, John comments on the number of canceled tours they’ve had, the alcoholism and various other illnesses that’ve led to the cancellations, and the lightweight rehabs Joel has attended in the past.

I love you, Billy, and this is tough love. Billy, you have your demons and you’re not going to get rid of them at rehab light. You’ve got to be serious. People adore you, they love you and respect you. You should be able to do something better than what you’re doing now.

Disney Star Demi Lovato Out Of Treatment, Grateful To Fans

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Disney star Demi Lovato has been released from rehab and, according to sources reporting to People, is doing just peachy.

The 18-year-old, who cut short her tour with the Jonas Brothers late last year and checked into a rehab facility for “emotional and physical issues,” was spotted in Santa Monica last Friday.

According to People‘s source, now that Lovato is finished with in-patient treatment, she will continue to see her doctors to work on her issues, and is relying on the support of her “inner circle” of “family and close friends” as she gets back to her regular routine.

Lovato is also thankful to her fans, crediting them as a source of support:

She is so grateful to all of her fans for their unbelievable support and looks forward to being able to talk to all of them very soon.
