If losing weight, getting in shape, and improving your health as well as your physical appearance are part of your goals for 2011, chances are stocking your ‘fridge with healthy foods, taking the pizza delivery place off speed dial, and making plans for wardrobe changes (hey, you’re gonna need smaller sizes, right?) aren’t the only preparations you should make.
You might need to prepare your psyche, too.
According to People.com, actress Raven-Symone is experiencing an…interesting personal reaction to her recent weight loss – or, perhaps better stated, to others’ reactions to her weight loss.
It seems that after losing weight, most people revel in the attention they receive from others, viewing it as positive and even confidence-building; Raven-Symone’s reaction, however, is quite the opposite:
Actually, now I wear bigger clothes because I don’t like the way people stare at me. I liked it before. Now, you’re just looking at me for the wrong reasons. Before, you were actually looking at me for a real reason.
Although her reaction might seem out of the ordinary, I’m not all that surprised. Think about it: A wildly successful young woman who is used to receiving attention and praise for her brains and talents suddenly starts receiving attention and praise for her body.
A body that, according to her, she was already happy with:
I thought I looked fabulous before and nobody else did. So, whatever.
What do you think of Raven’s reaction? Have you ever lost weight and, after receiving attention and praise for it, reacted similarly to Raven? What advice would you offer Raven and others who lose weight and watch people’s attention turn from what they’re doing to how they look?
