In a sudden move that surely shocked her fans, Disney star Demi Lovato cut short her tour with the Jonas Brothers and checked into a treatment facility earlier this week.
The singer and songwriter – who’s also well known for her roles in such Disney productions as Camp Rock, Princess Protection Program, and Sonny with a Chance – was currently on a world tour with the Jonas Brothers when she dropped out to seek treatment.
Lovato’s rep is adamant the star is NOT in rehab, but is seeking treatment for “emotional and physical issues”:
Demi Lovato left her tour early this weekend in order to seek medical treatment for emotional and physical issues she has dealt with for some time. Demi has decided to take personal responsibility for her actions and seek help. She is doing just that. (UsMagazine.com)
There’ve been rumors that Lovato dealt with eating disorder issues and self-mutilation, or “cutting,” especially after her split with Joe Jonas and when she opened up to Ellen DeGeneres in 2008 about being bullied in junior high. As far as I know, Lovato has never confirmed any issues with an eating disorder or cutting, so as far as I’m concerned those remain just rumors.
During an exclusive interview with Radar Online, Lovato’s father admitted he believed the pressures of Hollywood are affecting her:
There are a lot of pressures. That is one of the things I worried about when she signed with Disney. It’s just going to happen.
Lovato’s exposure to the pressures of Hollywood started early: Before her days as a Disney movie and television star – and of course, before there was ever even a hint she’d be touring with such big acts as the Jonas Brothers – Lovato was one of the faces of the popular children’s television show Barney & Friends.
Regardless of what’s causing the “emotional and physical issues,” let’s wish Lovato a speedy and healthy recovery.
