Celebrities Supporting LGBT Project “It Gets Better”

Thursday, October 7th, 2010

Have you checked out Dan Savage’s “It Gets Better” YouTube project, yet?

Initially in response to the growing number of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered teens who have committed suicide lately after suffering discrimination and bullying, sex columnist and LGBT activist Dan Savage created “It Gets Better,” a YouTube video project designed to spread the message to LGBT teens that, hey – it gets better.

Several celebrities have made videos for the campaign, including Neil Patrick Harris, La La Vasquez and Ciara, and members of the cast of Wicked.

Ellen DeGeneres also made a video (I actually caught her video yesterday during Dr. Phil’s episode on cyber bullying, teen suicide, and the tragic death of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi), and this morning I scanned through the massive list of videos and saw entries from Kathy Griffin, Ke$ha, Sarah Silverman, Jason Derulo, and Perez Hilton.

Of course, this isn’t about the celebrities supporting this campaign.

Britney Spears’ Conservatorship: Precaution Or Excessive?

Monday, October 4th, 2010
Pop princess Britney Spears enjoyed a retail romp on Montana avenue in Los Angeles, California on September 27, 2010. Britney was ready for a day in the heat with a water bottle, short shorts, tank top, light short sleeve jacket and her normally messy hair up in yet a messy bun. The Anticipation is on the up and up as Glee's Britney special gets closer to being aired on TV tomorrow night. Fame Pictures, Inc

Does anyone know why Britney Spears is still under conservatorship? I mean, besides Britney, her judge, and her dad?

Anyone?

Last Thursday, MTV.com reported that Britney and her father met with Judge Reva Goetz – at the request of the judge – to discuss the conservatorship Britney has been under since early 2008.

For those of you who aren’t all up to par on your legalese, being under conservatorship means someone else has control of all your stuff – stuff being your money, assets, etc. – and when “you” are an actual “you” and not an organization or some other entity, the reason for conservatorship usually circles around mental or physical inabilities to make legal, financial, and medical decisions on your own.

Given Britney’s past (the one filled with substance abuse and involuntary hospitalization; not the Mouseketeer one), no one was really shocked when she was placed under conservatorship; however, it’s been nearly three years. In Britney’s defense, two-and-some-change fairly uneventful, drama-free, seemingly mentally stable years.

Well, “uneventful” might not be the best word.

Some of you might remember my 2009 interview with PTSD survivor Michele Rosenthal, when I picked her brain about post-traumatic stress disorder, her thoughts on PTSD represented in entertainment media, and what she made of the Grey’s Anatomy‘s PTSD storyline – and GA actor Kevin McKidd’s portrayal of someone with PTSD – at the time.

Well, even though Dr. Owen Hunt (McKidd’s character) has since undergone treatment and his PTSD storyline in Grey’s Anatomy has sort of fizzled out, GA fans are now seeing another character battle the aftermath of trauma:

Dr. Cristina Yang.
