I just heard about this organization and am excited to check out their site. The more open we are about mental illness, the more we will be able to fight the stigma associated with it.

Hi Nikole -

I recommend contacting the National Eating Disorders Association. They might have some resources that can assist you.

@ nikole - I wish I could give you some information specific to insurance companies, policies, and how they relate to mental health issues, but I can't. I'm no expert in the insurance field.

However, you might be able to find some help or suggestions from other consumers at the Psych Central message board at http://forums.psychcentral.com.

Also, don't forget to check with any community mental health center that might be in your area. These facilities are usually government (city, state, or nation) funded and maintained, and most of them can help with obtaining treatment - including counseling and medication - on a sliding-scale fee basis.

Good luck to you *hug*

I have a very imminent and serious issue that I need to bring to your attention.

I am a 35-years old female and have been suffering from an Eating Disorder, Depression, and Bipolar II for over 20 years. I have been in in-patient treatment, had countless therapists, done out-patient therapy, and intensive out-patient therapy.

I recently, after checking with insurance benefits and being okayed, checked myself into a treatment center for Eating Disords in Reno, NV. After two days, I was told that my insurance denied my claim and I was sent home after trying to do a step-down program there that required me to live in a hotel. I was deemed not "sick" enough for the higher level of care that I had originally sought out.

I am now trying to get into a program that deals specifically with mood disorders. I have lived my life in and out of ER's with overdoses and self-mutilation. I don't want to live like this. I spoke with andAnthem Blue Cross representative this afternoon who told me that things weren't a free ride and I needed to work within my "community" to get better. That maybe I should just be in a psych ward.

I want to know what is going on with this insurance company. I want to know how you can pre-approve someone and then tell them, after they have spent a siginifact amount of money, that they are no longer approved.

I need this treatment. I deserve this treatment. I work in my community with young girls coaching and mentoring and I want to be the best possible person I can be for both myself and for them.

I don't understand why it's okay for someone else to decide the state of my mental health. What can I do? How can I bring attention to this?
