@ Don - <i>"And it is a problem of impulse control for the other people I grew up with."</i>

You know, I think that's a big problem for many people with histories of violence.

I grew up on the lower end of the social and economic level of soceity. Men beating their wives and children was something that happened all the time. Problems between people were, most of the time, addressed with fighing. In Rihanna's world men beat on women on a regular basis. Said another way, when physical attacts are 'normal' people just get on with their life afterwards. Today, as a professional, when someone makes me angry my first instinct is to hit them. It has never happened, but the programming is still there.
And it is a problem of inpulse control for the other people I grew up with.

@ Deborah D. - You're very welcome, and I'm glad you enjoyed the post.

I don't have any children yet, but just from my experiences growing up (and watching my sister grow up), I imagine it's very difficult for parents to come to a point (and recognize that point) where they can't exercise that extreme parental control anymore. It has to be tough going from the boss to the bystander, and it has to be tough finding the balance between the two. And, like you said, standing by your family to some degree is so important.

Alicia,

You put it well. I was abused in all the ways the news tells about as a child. I am 55 and it has taken me my entire life to get past my past...and I am not finished.

I have two daughters I love so much and I would want to take apart anyone who hurt them, but they are both over 21 and I can't tell them anything except answers to questions they ask me. So, I hope, I pray they will not let anyone take advantage or cruelly crush them in any way. I protected them when they were tiny and I love them just as much now - but only they can choose for themselves.

But now, matter what I will stand by them the way no one in my family stayed by me. I appreciate what you said, thank you.
