Medications play a key role in the treatment of various symptoms related to bipolar disorder for many people who have it. So, we’ve decided to shine a spotlight on some of the most common “bipolar medications.” Every other week or so, beginning today, we’ll focus on one medication, beginning with lithium.

Attempts to manage your medications without a doctor’s supervision could lead to unpredictable and potentially dangerous results.
and in my experience allowing your doctor to manage your medicine also can lead to unpredictable and potentially dangerous results.
can either lamictal, cymbalta (630mg) or xanax and ambien combination cause suicide? My son was diagnosed with bipolar II disorder. No pre-testing, just all of these meds in 2 1/2 weeks. he was found dead on the bedroom floor 4 weeks into treatment. The MD says it wasn’t his fault and he is not liable for the death. Shame, now I don’t have my son, but I do have his daily diaries that show how the cymbalta was making him sick each time he took it, but the doctor said it was ok…..
Betty,
I’m so sorry for your loss.
Cymbalta® (duloxetine hydrochloride) is a selective serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SSNRI) and I believe it carries an FDA Black Box label warning about the potential increased risks of “suicidal thinking and behavior (suicidality) in children, adolescents, and young adults.”
Betty, So sad for you. . .
Information about Lamictal. This has been an effective medication for me. I’ve been taking it for 6 years. What will keep manic is lack of sleep. If I take medication and do not skip dosages then it work’s. What are some new medications for Bi-Polar. i HAVE TYPE 2
I am SO sorry this happened. Suicide is a tragedy. Lamictal gave me a fever & a rash all over my body. The ER MD said it can be fatal but only in .002% of the population who take it. So I went back to Depakote. I’ve read a Lot about my brain disorders & treatments. Adults have different outcomes on meds than children/teens. All meds take about 6 weeks to have a readable effect. Seroquel is what I take against suicidal feelings. After 4 weeks on seroquel, my formerly constant thoughts of suicide were gone. This is too late to help your dear son but perhaps it will help someone else who is reading this. An MD should be wary of all side effects before prescribing. It’s so difficult to predict when someone may be suicidal because it is Not OK to talk about in our society. People are considered weak if they admit to having any sort of mental disorder. So it is not your fault that this happened. Bless you as you deal with your son’s death.
Can a person with this condition bear children?
hi betty so sorry i know it be alomst a yr, but this is the first time here. yes alot of the depression meds do but that alot of meds to be on too.now i dont know if you get to read this, but did an autopsy revealed sucidal or did his dr say it was sucidal?? b/c if it wasnt then you mighth go back on the dr. i hope you the very best and again i so sorry for you lost you thoughts and prayer or with me.
i have a son that 17 and he been bipolar since 3 grade and been on some of the meds you said and he was allergic to lacvmital… take care and god bless you……
Betty Ann, my heart goes out to you.
Betty, I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers are with you and your family.
Betty,
I am deeply sorry for your loss. My son was given Cymbalta a few years ago and it appeared to make him much worse. Coming off it was also dangerous. Treating mental illness is a difficult process and patients are not always monitored as closely as I think they should be. Doctors should listen carefully to what patients (or families) describe as possible side effects and not dismiss anything. We live with these disorders 24/7 and have much to offer.

My son has Bipolar II. He’s at college but barely making it because he can’t sleep. He’s tried Remeron, Ambien, Benadryl, and Ativan. Nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any suggestions whatsoever? I’m running out of choices. He can’t even think clearly with such a lack of sleep. He’s only on Depakote.
Hi, Vicki–
We did a post on sleep aids: http://blogs.psychcentral.com/bipolar/2009/11/bipolar-medication-spotlight-sleep-aids/
As you know, sleep is very very important in maintaining mood stability. Your son may need to check into a hospital if he can’t get sufficient sleep.
Betty,
I am so sorry for your loss. Each of those meds given to your son can worsen depression and cause suicidal ideation. That doctor IS responsible for what happened to your son. Most doctors don’t even know the exact mechanism of how the psych meds given out work. It is a guessing game. Doctors practice medicine, and they practice on us. I have been through hell and back trying dozens of meds as I am mixed bipolar rapid cycling type 1, although I was mis-diagnosed for 15 years and only took prozac which causes rapid cycling and mixed episodes if you are bi-polar. I am taking herbal, hormonal and natural aids now, as they seem to work better. Also know that if your thyroid is low, even if within the normal range that can cause depression and anxiety. So can a lack of vitamin D. But instead of testing people they just hand out meds with no regard for the possible side effects. I discovered my vit D levels were non-existent and my thyroid was low…I had to research and request the blood test myself. Both of those conditions can mimic depression and bi-polar behavior. No one should go on meds before being tested for certain conditions unless they are having a psychotic break. That doctor did not do his due diligence.
